Page 130 of the Bradt guide to the Azores 6th edition 2016:

"By far the most intriguing resident is the newly discovered little buttonquail ... which inhabits scrub-covered grassland at the southern end of the airport [Santa Maria}"

Is this true? I can find no reference to it elsewhere. Maybe it's a secret?

Little Buttonquail is an Australian species - presumably you mean Common Buttonquail / Andalusian Hemipode.

Common Buttonquail is also known as Small Buttonquail, I guess this is where the name mix up is originating with Little Buttonquail

That is the only place I have ever seen the species mentioned - not seen the book which I think was a limited private publication, just in the blog.

I'm just quoting from the book - I'm sure they mean Common.

Given that Quail are so common in the Azores it does seem believable that the Buttonquail might be there too - the habitat must suit them. I wonder how many people have looked for them.
