Marseilles Airport is on the correct (west) side of the city for the Camargue but still an hours drive from the sites on the east of the Rhone and two hours drive from those on the west of the Rhone. The airport is out side the city although there are a number of "Travel lodge" type hotels near by. Going into the city of Marseilles is in the wrong direction for the Camargue. I went with a group of friends in October last year and we stayed in Arles, which was central to both sides of the Rhone and had ample shops and restaurants plus lots of Roman remains to distract you from the birding, but a car was still essential to getting to the various reserves. If your flights arrives at 9ish once you have got your luggage and hire car you wouldn't arrive in Arles until past midnight so your best bet might be to stay overnight near the airport and then head over to Arles the next day. If you go round the bottom rather than via the autoroute you can make a day of it and tick off sites such as La Crau and Les Marais du Vigueirat. Basing yourself in Arles you can then explore the rest of the Camargue without the back and forward from Marseilles. There number of trip reports here on Bird Forum with sites, and lots on the wider web. A good site I found is http://maps.jacquet80.eu/demo_ign.html it all the IGN (French equiv of Ordnance Survey) maps of France. If you want any more info then I'm only to pleased to help.
