It was a struggle! underwater and in the shallows but it did swallow it.

Amble Marshes this afternoon, 2 immature Spoonbill flew in from the Estuary at approx 16:20 (photo) Other birds included pair of Garganey (photo of drake) 4 Gadwall, 2 Eurasian Teal, 2 Shelduck, 1 Tufted Duck, 2 Lapwing, and 3 Dunlin.
I have never thought much about possible movements among the Mallard at this time of year, this afternoon a pair of Mallard richly dyed orange, possibly from feeding in iron oxide rich ponds appeared feeding at the back of the reserve (photo)

Add a Wood Sandpiper to those this evening. The spoonbills flew to the estuary at about 9 pm and I did have a possible Great White Egret flying near Trewornan bridge but not 100% certain as the light was difficult.

A whimbrel took off from a sandbank in the river Camel at Grogley bridge this evening. A most unusual bird for that far upstream amongst dipper, kingfisher & grey wagtail.

21:30hrs - A pair of shelduck and their 11 (12?) ducklings have just tried to swim down river at Guineaport. They were intercepted by a nasty mute swan that attacked one of the ducklings, so they all swam back up river. I suspect this pair bred in Treraven meadows? (in which case they survived the bank re-enforcement works as well). Video to follow!

That is a very good breeding record for the Meadow Will! The Rabbit burrow they were using was situated very low down in the river bank though it still survived disturbance from Dogs and overhead line workers plus some very high tides.
