Nominate Limosa

I think it must be all about the body size, probably safer than bill & leg length, this 'nominate' limosa on the right at Amble Marshes this morning.

All the Shag around the Moul’s (Rumps Point) this morning appeared to be catching red, yellow banded eels, looking like sea snakes! I’m sure they must be Garfish, just not sure why they are that colour and not silver? Six plus Puffin on the sea.

Why does a Black-headed Gull have a brown head...

Pipefish ?

Thanks Chris, I thought they looked a bit like Sea Horses. This looks like even more bad news for the birds, all the Shags in view appeared to be struggling with, or attempting to swallow these today, there must be a huge influx at the moment, probably something to do with the recent high winds. Some even looked as if they might choke! Certainly no substitute for sand eels.

I knew what they were as I saw a fisherman catch one at Falmouth last summer - I've only seen two in my life but apparently there have been huge numbers off Cornwall before - website

Male Tufted Duck.

An interesting adult male (presence of long crest) Tufted Duck at Amble Marshes this morning; Showing some odd features, mantle & wings not really black at all, pale wing-tips, odd looking bill pattern, some Rufous vermiculations to under-parts, plus the eye appears a little too dark for adult Tufted. A striking individual, possibly a backcross of a Pochard/Tufted Hybrid? or just an interesting variant.
