To me all the suggested species other than Nuthatch don't fit based on the colour of the feathering and the shape of the bill. Here's a Song Thrush: http://www.digitalnature.org/vogels/zanglijster%202.jpg Here are some Nuthatchs: http://www.hlasek.com/foto/sitta_europaea_a9982.jpg http://www.maisnatureza.com/images/trepadeira-azul.jpg It has a large effect on the location where you assume that the bill meets the skull, as the Portugese bird has lost some of the feathering at the nostril, whereas the live bird you compared it to has a lot more feathering there (in other words, you can't see the skull in either picture, you are just estimating where the skull begins based on the feathering). Look at the picture I have attached (the skull should be the skull of a Nuthatch, although the bill looks a bit strange probably due to the angle). The bill is 17 mm to the tip of the feathering, not to the skull. I would guess that the bill extends a bit further behind the feathering (like it always does on birds), in any case I can't see the skull in the picture. The wing length can be only grossly estimated based on the picture, you don't even see the entire primaries. The length of the visible part of the primaries is about 70 mm, the rest is just speculation. A wing length of say 85 mm seems completely plausible to me. Some measurements for ssp caesia: wing 81-91 mm, bill to skull 18.0-22.2 mm. Ssp hispaniensis occurs in Portugal, don't have any measurements for that. To me these measures fit extremely well the subject bird. I can only conclude that it is a Nuthatch, a species that frequently visits gardens.
