In comparison to some of the threads on here recently and their stunning photography (!), this is going to be mundane but hopefully of some interest. I left home at 3.00am this morning and via Gatwick, with two friends, we ended up leaving Tenerife airport at 1.30pm. The wind was howling at 35mph. It seemed sensible to try and fit in some easy birding despite tiredness. Blackbird, Collared Dove and Blackcap got the trip list started. It was only added to by Feral Pigeon and Yellow-legged Gull before arriving at the Las Lajas picnic site but before we had parked, Blue Chaffinch and Canary had been seen. Maybe twenty of each were present together with half a dozen Great Spotted Woodpecker and an African Blue Tit and a Raven. After an hour and a half, we headed on deciding to sort out our accommodation at Playa de Las Americas. En route several Kestrels were seen. Finding our accommodation proved problematic and when we did it was clear that all was not right. To cut a long story short, we had no accommodation. During the intervening period, Spanish Sparrows had chirped away and one friend had had three flyover Little Egrets. I had been transfixed by some harsh parakeet calling and eventually tracked down two Black-hooded/Nanday Parakeets off Paseo Cangrejo. I punched the air in celebration. :-O Also at least two singing Canary Islands Chiffchaffs entertained us. Alas all the Collared Doves even the interesting ones sang just like decaocto so it wasn't a double celebration. We had originally planned to stay in the south to visit La Gomera but more encouraging opinions on seeing White-tailed on Tenerife were beginning to change our mind. With the wind and our accommodation having fallen through, a change of plan was hatched and we are now in Las Caletillas better placed for Icod de Alto/Ruiz Gorge, Erjos and Punta del Teno tomorrow. The change of plan meant I avoided seeing any of my team's abdication in the Champions League this evening. Tonight was the only night of the potential four for the fixture that I could not make. A customary tear was shed over a beer as so many times before. Now for a decent night's sleep and some pigeon searching tomorrow. The combined trip list sits on a non-existent fifteen! All the best
