Well today's main hope was for better weather. We didn't get it!! In my 1999 report, we wrote on the subject of pigeons - 'El Cedro on Gomera is a much better site with easy access, so unless you're short of time or cash, go there.' We had time but no longer have as we leave for Fuerteventura tomorrow evening. We had the cash but not the brain cells to listen to my own advice. I have some nice photos from above today of the total white out that encased the laurel forest layer in Northern Tenerife. A belated Quail on call from the Ruiz Gorge yesterday from one of my friends took the trip list to 30. The day started as yesterday with the same species but with a twist. If Nanday Parakeet is the king of the WP countable plastic parrots, Monk Parakeet is the crown prince. Two outside the hotel this morning were welcome. We headed to the Anaga Peninsula and the Mirrador at Pico del Ingles. 50 yard visibility meant African Blue Tit, Robin, Canary, Goldcrest (heard) etc but no pigeons.... We headed to Mirrador de la Grimona. This is plainly an excellent site for Laurel Pigeon with at least six and many perched views including two together being amorous. I cursed not having my camera to hand when one displayed in looping circuits with its tail fanned but really as with yesterday they were solely good scope views. We mustn't complain as we've had excellent success with the species. But no confirmed Bolle's seen today - just the odd initial Feral Pigeon scare. Other species included two adult Gannet offshore, Sardinian Warbler, Sparrowhawk, Buzzard, etc. We returned to the derelict Restaurant El Bosque site at Ruiz Gorge and had similar species to yesterday with five Buzzard and again Robin and Goldcrest (heard). We cut and ran to Chinajiga. It was a pointless endeavour. We took our visibility down to ten yards and ended up instead driving up and through the laurel cloud forest layer to Zona Recreativa de Caldera. Here in 1999 we had excellent views of the Goldcrest. We did again with an added advantage of a cafe where African Blue Tit, Chaffinch and Robin came to the crumbs left out. In addition, point blank Blue Chaffinch are always fun as was a Grey Wagtail. From there a spin to the Mount Teide car park was birdless but returning to the coast along the TF24 was excellent for Berthelot's Pipits particularly around the observatory area. So there we have it - trip list a comedy 33 species and tomorrow's priorities better Bolle's Pigeon views and lucking into a Plain Swift. I'm predicting hideous low cloud again though! If that's true, the failure to cover ourselves with La Gomera will look a mistake. All the best
