At the airport in a cafe! In 1999, at this time before my flight, three birders were walking in a line across the plain north of Embalse de Los Molinos and after 15 mins, I ticked Cream-coloured Courser. I've seen a few since in at least four countries from memory so no need for that this time. (I then seawatched from the terminal but only saw Cory's Shearwaters. I won't be doing that this time either.) We pottered around today. We started off by heading to Rosa de Catalina Garcia. It was dry. All I can recall is a distant Egyptian Vulture over the hillside and the ever present Ravens. We had half an interest in Fuerteventura race African Blue Tit so followed up a trip report by heading to Pajara. A difficult choice of cafe ensued and while we mulled over that a stroll around produced a couple of Chiffchaffs, Blackcap, Ring-necked Parakeet, Linnet, Goldfinch, African Blue Tit, 4 Plain Swift, Kestrel and a Yellow-browed Warbler. We settled on the cafe from which you could see the Yellow-browed Warbler most easily. I stared at Collared Doves but save for one odd call, no repeat of yesterday's Barbary ecstasy. We took the Betancuria road to the Mirador. Hand-fed Ravens were fun and whilst standing next to a sign saying Do Not Feed the Squirrels, I pointed out an incoming Barbary Ground Squirrel to a tourist so he could oblige. Another Egyptian Vulture was over the hillside. It was time for another cafe stop. This time it was in Betancuria with a similar mix of species including Canary, African Blue Tit and Kestrel. From the road north of there, one male Fuerteventura Chat crossed the road - presumably to get to the other side. We decided on one last site being Rosa del Taro north of Triquivijate. This held a decent amount of water but only a pair of Ruddy Shelduck with young and quite a few Coot. We were pleased with Barbary Partridge, Trumpeter Finches, the ubiquitous Berthelot's Pipits and Ravens and a Buzzard but better was a female Fuerteventura Chat carrying food and showing down to a few feet. There was no sign of the male unfortunately. She was in the scrub and trees at the extreme south end of the water. So the final trip list sits at a more respectable 65 species and I'll update with a list of the species, sites and costings on my return. Hopefully, I'll also post some photos. My BlackBerry is defeating my attempts at back of the camera shots because the size of photo is too large. All the best
