Hi lovely birdforum,

I'm looking to start taking photos of the birds I see but know very little about cameras. My father-in-law has an old Cannon D40 with a 200mm lens that's in great condition. Would this work?

Thanks!

GG

Which camera are you enquiring about, a Canon 40D or a Nikon D40?

The Nikon is a 6 MP APS-C DSLR while the Canon is a 10 MP APS-C DSLR. At a crop factor of around 1.6 a 200 mm lens will have a FOV like a ca. 300 mm lens on a FF camera. To my mind that would just about work if it is the Canon you're talking about. On the Nikon there would be no margin for cropping at only 3000 x 2000 pixels image size.
