Nice woodpecker in the snow. We've had only 2-3 days with snow. - I wished I had something better to show than sparrows, like hummingbirds... presently there are only nine hummingbirds living in European zoos: 4 in Germany, 2 each in France and the Netherlands, 1 in Switzerland.

Seems like a very lonely hummer in Switzerland.
Surely a topic for the local SPCA.

Indeed. |:D| I thought about visiting the Vogelpark Walsrode (Germany) and cheer up the three hummingbirds there (from three different species). But five hours by train (one way) is a little much for visiting three sad birds.

PS. In 2006 it became illegal to import birds caught in the wild into the EU. I guess the long list of "former holdings" of hummingbirds in those 300 European zoos can be read mainly as a document of failure, quite a contrast to the mere nine individuums left today.

Wow, that is a big list!
It does suggest that the zoos are a real factor in the animal trade, but also that they had no captive breeding efforts. I believe the parrot trade in the US is now fueled entirely by captive bred birds, surely hummers are similarly manageable.

Googling Walsrode, I see that I misunderstood the meaning of "holding". They have three hummingbirds on display for the public, 15 more live there behind the scene, for breeding and exploration. Altogether it seems very ambitious.

Apparently it is very difficult to breed hummingbirds, a fact perhaps mirrored in that list. The EU decision is also meant to reduce the danger of SARS. Anyway, since I'll never fly to Costa Rica, Walsrode can be my personal alternative.

My experiences with the Baxxtar battery (replacement for Canon's original NB-10L) have been positive. Even after years of use, this battery feeds the SX50 for 190 minutes. That's twice as long as a replacement battery from another company (no need to give the name). And a brandnew Baxxtar lately run for more than 4 hours. - Below: a recent photo taken two days ago.

Am I right in thinking that you can't buy the SX50 new anymore in the UK?
TIA, Mike.

If you can't find it new in the UK, here are two offers from Germany. The first (Euro 279) is for a used camera (1 year warranty), the second (Euro 329) for a display item (so it's practically new; 2 year warranty). It may be riskier to buy it used at ebay, but so far I've been lucky and the price can be as low as 160-200 Euro.

[PS. A new example for the ability of the SX50 to magnify... I was able to decipher the complete text on the dipper's ring, by combining three photos.]

Hopefully this is the right thread.

I don't actually use my camera much and don't know it all that well. I do find that I tend to accidentally mash a lot of buttons on the back with my right hand so that I suspect it is in all sorts of modes I don't understand.

It recently has begun doing this really slow shutter speed thing that recharging the battery didn't seem to solve.

I looked up how to set it back to factory defaults and tried that but I get a "busy" message?

Anyone experience this and know a fix?

Thank you

Hi Marys1000,
"It recently has begun doing this really slow shutter speed thing"
You haven't set the custom timer by any chance, the right hand side on the jog wheel.
I clip that with my thumb quite frequently.
The busy message usually only comes up when the camera is writing to the sd card, that seems a strange thing to happen when doing a reset.
Have you got another card you can try, format it in the sx50 first.
Or have you knocked the "lock" slide switch on the side of the card to locked or half locked ??
Though that should give a card locked message.
A couple of wild guesses that may get you closer to a solution.

Hello everyone.

I'm thinking of buying one of these used locally (in Bulgaria). It comes with all the accessories but not the CD. Is this likely to cause me problems? I realise I can download the user manual but are there other software considerations?
Thanks for any advice and thanks to everybody for the thread. It has been most useful in making my mind up.

I never took the CD out of its wrapper, not needed imo.
Enjoy your purchase, they are good bits of kit.

Have posted a few meagre first attempts in the gallery.

Thanks again to all who have contributed especially CF for his C1 & C2 settings.

Recent photos, the first apparently shows a case of "courtship feeding" among nuthatches. My eyes are too bad (or it happened too fast) to see what happened while I was shooting a series of three photos. Only the PC screen revealed what was going on. - Presently I am experimenting with my old Canon DSLR, but I was probably lucky to have used the silent SX50 at this occasion, as close as I was to the birds.

Do you use any sort of video-editing software, Brian? If so, there will no doubt be an option to mute or remove audio before you export your file to You Tube or wherever.

I use iTunes, and I often use this feature, so I presume other editing programs will offer it.
