Ooops - they all got away! So here, hopefully, they are.

I remain staggered at just what you can capture with the SX 50. The nesting peregrine and fulmar were at least 100 meters away, and the linnet was getting on for 100 meters too.

I've been a digiscoper for about 10 years and currently use a Canon s95 on a Kowa 883 but was looking for a more convienent setup I could take on motorcycle trips. After studying threads I lost interest until I came across this one. I've used the sx50 now for a week and what a joy - it's all so fast and easy. I've gotten pics that were impossible to get with the scope and taken over a dozen which I posted on my gallery. For small birds under 30' it does an incredible Job. I didn't believe posts that said no tripod needed but now I do.

I do miss the long range capability and after the fun has worn thin I plan to get the old gear out but one things for sure, the sx50 will be included. Many thanks to all who put this thread together.

Every now and then it's fun to post one of those here is where I am standing and here is the bird comparisons.

Here you go. Here I am in my driveway looking at the backyard tree in the center of the photo.

And then here what's sitting on a twig in the center of the tree. A tiny sitting still hummingbird. It's probably the ruby throated hummingbird that's most common around here but sadly the angle of the light and shadows were not for the best photo.

No crop on that bird photo either. Full frame.

I have just broken my lens cap. Can anyone tell me what size replacement lens cap I need for the SX50? And can anyone point me in the direction of one in the UK? Ebay, Amazon or similar.

While I'm here I might as well ask, should I get a uv filter and/or hood for this camera? And again, where can I get one that will fit? I'm off on holiday soon and I'm wondering if it will be worth it.

Hi, I find digital media store pretty good, just select your camera and it will show you all the items available for it. They usually have lens caps/hoods etc. I've used them lots of times. Hope this helps.

You need a 52mm lens cap, although i got one from Amazon and despite it being 52mm it didn't fit.

My dad got one from 7dayshop and it seems to fit ok. Although that one is Hama (his is 7dayshop own brand), which is the same as the one i got from amazon, so i can't guarantee it will fit.

Pretty amazing you can do that hand-held isn't it?

those are great shots andy,i don't have much luck using the 2x converter on my sx40 and just stick with the 1.5

I find hand holding with 2x converter on near impossible as it is waving all over the place as the camera is so light, so struggle to get the focus nailed on.

So respect for those photo's Andy :t:

SX50HS Specs.

I thought I would show you some of my better results.The first is hand held with 2x converter at 50m,the second hand held at full zoom at 20m and the third hand held with 2x con at about 25m....Eddy

Some pretty fine shots Eddy. The last couple days I've been comparing digiscope pics with the sx50 pics at the top end. Both make good pics but when I enlarge in Elements side by side all the feather detail disappears at 75 feet. Along the edge of the bird I can still see individual feathers with the digiscope but only a grainy edge with a fine halo on the sx50.

Closer at 40-50 ft not as bad on the sx50 but in the same range I can see the feather spines with the scope. My digiscope camera is a Canon s95 but the big optics sure make that old Canon sing. On fast small birds there really is no comparing and I'm finding it rewarding using both. The sx50 really compliments the digiscope setup.

I've just got my SX50 but it was a bit too late last night to do much other than fiddle with it. Just out of interest, how do most people get the photos onto the computer? Do you use a USB (not provided with the camera unfortunately) or can you just slot the SD card into the computer? Also, what (ideally free) software is best for dealing with the pics?
