Lucky to have found a male Common Redstart not too far from home in a private paddock.

Couldn't get a decent shots with my 7D/400 prime lens as the bird was 30m away at best.

However did better with the SX50 with full optical zoom and with the 2X converter switched on.Hand held.

Cute little grabbed shot of a juvenile Bullfinch having a wash on my Lilly pads. One slip and it would be in 4ft of water.

Found a dead chaffinch in my pond yesterday. It looked healthy and I suspect it may have taken a step too far! Lots of birds seem to prefer the pond to the bird bath.

A couple more shots for the BIF/Sports Mode folder. Although still not brilliant, I feel that the SX50 is a lot better at dealing with this sort of thing than the SX40 ever was...

Taken with an SX50 at Rutland Water, UK yesterday (23/8). The best pictures we have managed to take so far with the camera. Probably the best subject too!

Thanks, IanF

Just a short message to express my gratitude to Roy C, who started this thread, and in particular to IanF, whose outstanding photographs posted in October 2012 convinced me to buy the Canon SX50. Before I changed to this camera, I had used the Canon 450D + Tamron 70-300 + 1.4 Kenko, but the real fun began with the SX50. Sorry, this "thank you" postcard is late. Since early November 2012 I was just too busy taking photographs with my SX50. It is presently in repair...

The following photo is nothing special - I am not a great photographer. But it shows something else: the SX50 has become my daily companion. When I saw the stonechat sitting on a tree near the river Enz, I had just been shopping. So I put down the two bags full of groceries and took this photograph. I've never gone shopping with the 450D...

Question: I've seen a few people recommending sports mode for birds in flight. Is there an advantage to sports mode over shutter priority mode set to a high shutter speed? Apologies if it's a dumb question I'm only an amateur photographer who has never used anything except auto mode.

No reason why using shutter priority mode wouldn't work just as well alongside selected settings as used in the sports mode and saved to C1/C2.

From a personal perspective, as I have C1 & C2 set for purposes other than BIF, whipping the dial round to Sports Mode is the easiest option.

Thanks for your answer. I will probably be attempting to photograph BoPs in flight as it is migration at the moment. So therefore I think I will set C1 or C2 to a high shutter speed, continuous shooting and 2x teleconverter enabled. Any other things I should take into consideration?

With all the talk about the new SX60 this topic had fallen off the page but I have an observation that will also likely apply to the SX60 as well.

On the build-in digital 1.5 and 2x teleconverter, there is a second use for it that I've been using increasingly.

On dark and gloomy days when the SX50 just doesn't have the light sensitivity that I think that a lot of us wish it had, I find that using the 2x converter allows me to back off on the optical zoom and allow more light in for a given object that I wish to frame.

That happened this morning. Very dark, gloomy day. There was a deer in the yard and using only optical zoom the SX50 just couldn't get the light needed to focus. So I backed off on optical zoom and flicked on the 2x teleconverter and it was finally able to get a decent focus.

The deer photo is a focal length 75.98mm, F/5.8 and shutter speed 1/25 sec.

It was in the center of the second photo but left.

Forgive me if I am acting totally dim,I have read several times about this "flicking the switch for the tele converter" BUT where is it I know I can go into the menu but where is there a switch?

Set it to the S button. The wildcard button to left of the viewfinder. Best use for that button i can think of.
