Canon SX60HS in Action (3 Viewers)

A Western Osprey at over 140m (likely between 140 and 155m):

I'm not entirely sure how I captured this clear a photo at this range, but I did double-check and no digital zoom was used and I used my semi-usual 33% resize, plus some effort to get rid of the camera noise (it was far worse). Good Photoshop plugins are not to be underestimated, I guess. Shout out to Topaz Labs, for what it's worth. :t:

Helps too that ospreys are fairly large birds? I've shot harriers at that distance and they aren't much to look at.

4 Years of Photos with a SX60

On Monday (Dec. 17) I upgraded my SX60 to a SX60, but over the past four years I took 1000's of bird photographs with my SX60. I know some folks question the image quality, but I found the camera a good device. I have a detailed review on my blog on my experiences with the SX60.

the current price of the sx60 is dearer than when I bought mine in 1014 ?im leaning towards the sx 70 now my sx 60 is playing up, loved this thread lots of usefull info

Very nice paddyluke. I was in Carmarthen Cameras this week and they had a p1000. I've seen some very good results from it. The thing that caught my eye was how seriously massive it was. I mean, it looked like it had it's own gravitational pull:eek!: I guess that's the trade off for the huge zoom.

Suggest he uses shutter priority and speed of 1/1000. Will surprise him with the quality of the pics at any range and don't forget the oh so simple Manual focus.

An example I can give is I have used the SX60 to photograph a Harrier Hawk hovering out near 100m and a Black Vulture soaring at nearly 120m—with only optical zoom (to be clear, that's BiF, albeit not faster movers). Photos I actually was happy enough to put in my gallery after a little work post.

Delving into the digital teledapter or digital zoom degrades the image to a point where I only use them for ID'ing purposes. So while I sometimes try that, I very rarely end-up considering them keepers for my gallery. But to be fair: I have I think two or three in my gallery where circumstances worked out with the digital teledapter, so it is possible.
