Cold winter - time birds are most active? (1 Viewer)

On a cold winter day in the US mid Atlantic area, when in the day are woodland birds - like wrens and sparrows and woodpeckers - most active? Early at sunrise, or later when it’s warmer? I ask them when I see them but we don’t speak the same language.

They feel like you do at that time (a) I'm freezing cold and (b) I'm starving hungry - so they get on with hunting for food and eating it.

I find in winter, based on experiences in Wyoming, Michigan, and most recently Wisconsin, that birding in winter is a lot less time sensitive, and I find birds to be active most of the day (assuming no other inclement weather). Should I choose to, I can sleep in and still get a "good" day of birding in.

(Good being relative in some of these spots, given how few birds are still around in winter!)
