Collins Bird Guide 2nd Ed; Reviewed (1 Viewer)

Yeah, Feb 4 was the last date that I had seen for the US version. But they still aren't ready quite yet, according to Princeton. But hopefully it will be soon.

Just read through all 10 pages (so far) of this thread and not found any mention of a couple of glaring errors, and I use the term glaring quite deliberately here, that I've seen in the copy I bought today. There are several plates where the print quality is all wrong with some particular colour being way too bright. Several people have mentioned the new american warblers plate but is it just my copy where the greens are all day-glo? And then there's the oh so BLUE!! tit page where even the maps are too blue, or is that just the dazzle from the azure tit (ahhh! my eyes, my eyes) :eek!:
I see that Owen did pick up on the Bonellis warblers and I think that's another plate to have suffered in the same way. I'm sure the artists didn't paint them using these colours.

As with most of the problems mentioned in previous posts, it seems there's been a lack of professionalism on the part of the publishers/printers. It's not like someone just knocked this together on a Friday afternoon after a good lunch, is it? They only needed to hand a copy to each of the authors to look at for a couple of days and say, "There you go lads, are you happy with that?" and most of these issues could have been eliminated before the main print run.

Before anyone starts wailing that I'm being too negative about it, I've got no complaints with the work put in by the artists and authors and yes, the 1st ed was the best field guide I've seen and the 2nd ed has some nice additions.... I'm just a bit frustrated that someone at Collins couldn't have taken a bit more pride in their work. Like getting a new car with a scratched bonnet, it's still going to drive ok, but :C

US edition seems to be out now

Apparently, the US (Princeton) version has now been published. Has anybody seen it yet? Is it any different - except for the front pages - from the "Collins"?

Have to say the 2nd edition is certainly a big let down for birdwatchers with it's spelling mistakes, some of the plates are to dark in colour, wrong info about some of the birds etc.I have never heard of a Nile Walley Sunbird that is disgrace. You would have thought before being published someone would have checked through the book for errors. The first edition is much better.

Im in two minds now to cancel my order from Amazon, reading all this negative response to the new edition.

Very sad! as rokermartin said you would have thought some one would have checked the book before finalized.

As rokermartin also said, It dosent really affect the "drivability" of the guide...its just an annoyance that if you want the "perfect" edition...you may have to wait for a printing a few years down the line.

There is an errata thread HERE which Killian has replied to. He's forwarding typos etc to the publishers for rectification in later editions.
IMHO it's got mistakes granted, but the good stuff out weighs the bad, you've only got to look at Kevin Baker's Warbler book to see what happens when it's the other way round. That was £30+ I wasted, I've hardly touched the damn thing since buying it online, I'm happy with the £16 I paid for the Collins and sure I'll use it in the field.

The 'Collins' is clearly the best field guide available, of that there is no doubt, and the one that all others should aspire to. I have a battered paperback in the car and the coffee table edition takes pride of place on the bookcase. I'd even go so far as saying that the book was the catalyst that got me into birding. However, i haven't bought the new edition. Of course, i will do, probably both sizes again, but i'll wait until the re print and the fixing of the rather too numerous errors.

If i've not made my love of this book obvious, i should point out that if i didn't have the first edition already, i'd buy the new one in a heartbeat.

i've seen some hysterical over reactions in my times but that ones up there with the death of princess di.

it's a birlliant book every book in existance will have the odd typo somewhere even the OED it is a function of it being produced by humans

Large-format edition

How was the large format version of the 1st edition like? Same book in larger format or also additional content?
Same content, just larger.

The cover advertised 'entirely re-designed text'. But as far as I can see the content is identical - just rearranged in a less-cramped layout to take advantage of the additional space.

Maybe next time they will ask you to check the spelling.....;)

Definitely an overreaction on your part here. Though I agree that the many little imperfections are annoying. But they certainly don't detract from the major usefulness of this new edition.

At least they didn't spell its wrongly (it's) and forget to put spaces after the commas to (or should that be too?)!
