Yes...i had noticed the avatar...the bloke depicted does seem 'vaguely' familiar..

ps...i was mostly into Marvel comic characters....[rather than DC]...

They do not respond...Is this a market issue? I honestly doubt it...On top of this the collins is stamped in trentino...

In Italy they have good books too which they don´t translate in german, f.e."GLI IBRIDI" (http://www.alcedoedizioni.it/scarten/pubblicazioni.asp)

......I don´t know how correct this information is but at the present I do believe it. Ordered the english version therewhile which I will donate my brother in law (in poland they use the english version) when the german edition is available ;-)

Could not resist and ordered the hardcover edition today. I may follow your idea (though not necessarily donating) when I get the softcover one. I'm sure some Swiss friends will want an English copy considering how long it takes till the German one is out.

One question to the English versions of the collins, as so far I only know the German edition:
The German edition (1st) has a letter-code that indicates for every species the status in Germany. Does the British version give such indications as well (status in Britain and Ireland)? And what about the American version, which is called "Birds of Europe"?

The UK version (HarperCollins) includes codes for status and abundance/frequency in Great Britain & Ireland.

The first edition of the US version (Princeton) has the same codes - presumably the 2nd Edition will do likewise. Princeton clearly assumes that North American birders visiting Europe are most interested in the British Isles!

It's understandable that the German-language version gives status in Germany (as it was published in Germany), but perhaps it should also have addressed Austria, Liechtenstein & Switzerland...

It would be interesting to know if the same approach is followed in all translations, eg, status in Israel in the Hebrew version etc?

I guess that depends if the publishers of the respective language versions produce a mere translation or if they also adapt the content, as it has been done in the German version, where also in some of the text has been adapted...
