Collins Bird Guide: new edition (1 Viewer)

Richard Klim

My amazon account, from where I pre-ordered a few copies back in July, says January 2010 for dispatch. How come some are saying October?
Amazon UK is still giving 7 Jan 2010 as the date for the (later) paperback version.

[HarperCollins currently gives 1 Oct 2009 for h/b, 7 Jan 2010 for p/b.]

I heard secondhand that the author of another European bird book was told by his publisher that the English language version would have to refer to "Britain and Europe" as all the potential customers in Britain would just assume it didn't include British birds if it only referred to Europe.

Good thing the HBW is published in Spain and not in Britain, otherwise it would be HBBW (Handbook of the Birds of Britain and the World). ;)

So then, the Birds of Britain and Ireland and Europe?

I heard secondhand that the author of another European bird book was told by his publisher that the English language version would have to refer to "Britain and Europe" as all the potential customers in Britain would just assume it didn't include British birds if it only referred to Europe.

So... does that leave Ireland as part of 'Britain' or has that bird flown?

Subbuteo says September 2009 for the hardcover, jan 2010 for the paperback. So Stephen, either the websites you looked at are referring to the hardcover or they have not been updated

Just wondering whether the second edition is being published in Swedish first (as per the original version)? If it's already available, perhaps a Swedish member can give us a review of the changes...

No, the Swedish version is not available yet. I think it will be published October 16... having been pushed back a few times. ;)
That's paperback, strangely enough I haven't heard anything about a Swedish hardcover version.

Nah, it's about normal as far as publishers go.....

Either we are all way too eager to finally get this new edition. Or else, it is really more than silly how they handle this. I think it's the second version that is the case here. Reminds me of the Boeing Company's pushing back the date of first flight of their "Dreamliner". Well, maybe this book has become a "Dreamguide"?

Is it me, or is this getting a bit silly...?

Right way up again
Shall we place our bets? My stab-in-the-dark guess is May 2010. Any advances on May 2010?
The winner gets a copy of the third edition when that comes out.

My guess is that when the third edition comes out, the wikipedia entry for 'bird' will be

Bird

Birds were creatures that once flew, but over time became massive land-based predators, eating what were once known as 'humans' [citation needed]. A legend existed among the last of the 'humans' found on the planet that all of the birds could be described in a legendary tome known only as 'The Second Coming of Koh-lins'. No fragment of this book exists and it is doubted by many scholars to have been real, but indeed a metaphor for orderliness during the ravages of the 42nd century.
Birds died out several years after the descendents of humans returned from aeons in space, mainly as they were tasty. The last 'human' died in Hobart Zoo, 22nd January 4315.

According to some news at SOF (Swedish Ornithological Society) the guide won't be out until March 2010... why am I not surprised?
