You can go far without colors, when you concentrate on structure and especially learn the feeding style and habits of different birds. Take Sibley book, take some lists of species seen in your area, mark them on the book to remove species which are not found in NY, and browse the book for these species. I learned much of Indian birds by reading it the toilet.For calls - good advice is recently on worldtwitch website about making list of sounds, making mix in random order on your ipod and listening to them.</blockquote>
