Tayler, could you post the full photo of the "cropped quiz bird" whenever someone comes up with the correct ID?

You got it. Here's the Horned Grebe.

And yes Neil, it's a Great Blue Heron. Guess that one was a bit easy, eh? |:D|

Now, time for another quiz bird! Hopefully this one won't be to difficult for those of you who know your gulls. |})|

Enjoy...

Larry, you're not wrong there!

Still, how about a juvenile Lesser Black-backed Gull - IF you have them over there?

Hello Sue,

Oh, I do wish it was a Lesser Black-backed Gull. We do have a few records of one out here in the West once in awhile, but it's not this gull...

Ok.. when it comes to gull, I'd better not even guess... But I'll do it anyways:D! Western Gull it is! (don't take my confidence seriously). Actually, I'd go with Lou, but as California Gull was already guessed, I'll try this desperated guess...

Nope, unfortunately not a L. c. californicus or albertaensis. And not a L. o. occidentalis or wymani...

Keep guessing everybody! You'll get it eventually...

So much work, so little time...so let's go birding
I assume the picture is a bit underexposed? No one else has guessed Glaucous-winged Gull, right? That's my guess. There's not too much fringing on the primaries, but they are the same color as the tertials and wing coverts. I'm also getting the impression of a bulky bird that is not too long winged.

Could Tayler have a photo of a .......... Larus argentatus "somethingotheris" ?

Or maybe a (perish the thought) "hybrid" ?

Glaucous-winged X Herring ?

You wouldn't do that, would you Tayler!
