Bird is the word...
No NA field guide, eh? Well, I'd say you're doing pretty well because... you're correct! It's a Gull-billed Tern alright. My favorite North American tern besides Least... We also saw Royal, Elegant, tons of Caspians, Forster's and Black Skimmers in SoCal.

Now for something completely different... ;)

Bird is the word...
Black-chinned Sparrow. Nice bird.

I'll say. A BCSP it is. I was able to call this bird in for a closer view from high up on a brushy hillside for the birding group I was with since I have this sparrow's song as a ring tone on my phone... It was a really exciting encounter.

That's it! Nicely solved... We saw several WTSWs along Hwy S22 east going toward the Salton Sea. A pretty, yet sometimes barren place...
