Now let´s change Piculet! While we´re at it, we might as well solve Lafresnaye’s Piculet Picumnus lafresnayi at the same time! This Piculet was described by the same Alfred Malherbe, also in 1862, in the same book, (the same link as in Post #1), actually on the same page where the text of "Castelnaud's" Piculet ended, on p.282. From what I can see there´s no dedication, or anything else regarding Lafresnay in this the (acknowledged) very brief type description itself (attached). But according to Malherbe this species had already been described by "J. Verreaux"!? Anyone know what text, by Verreaux, Malherbe was referring to? If not I think we´re just a bit lucky, since there is yet another Piculet (on the same page) the "PICUMNE SQUAMULÉ" (todays's Scaled Piculet Picumnus squamulatus LAFRESNAYE 1854). In this text (attached) regarding the latter Piculet Malherbe refer to Monsieur "le baron de Lafresnay" and to an article that he, the "le baron", wrote in "Revue zool. 1854" (= Revue et Magasin de Zoologie Pure et Appliquée) … so I think we can be pretty sure we´re dealing with the well-known French naturalist; ornithologist, entomologist, traveller and collector Baron Noël Frédéric Armand André de Lafresnay (1783–1861), whose Noble name sometimes is written La Fresnay. But just to be on the safe side, better safe than sorry … anyone have any idea, any clue, of where to find that claimed, Verreaux's earlier, description of Picumnus lafresnayi (or what came to be the same)? It would be great to find that one … hopefully with a unquestionable dedication, a "good quote" or at least a clear indication that we´re looking for the proper Lafresnay.
