BBC Wildlife's August issue has a feature on cooperative hunting by Galapagos sea lions. Groups of females chase fish for up to 800 m towards sheltered beaches where the sea lions, as well as brown pelicans pick them off. Sometimes sea lions, unrelated to these groups of females, already on the beach will also attempt to prey on the fish.
The person who discovered this behaviour, Tui De Roy, and wrote the article along with excellent photographs of the behaviour, has had her research published in Ecology & Evolution as an open access peer-reviewed article. She's not an academic scientist, but did team up with researchers to write her article. But I like the fact that the paper is based on her many observations and shows that with good quality data it's possible to be published.
