Paul,

We had an interesting discussion (well more like panic actually) when news of this bird came out. What would access be like at Walmsley in case of a mega like this? Is it not CBWPS only access?

Good birding

Ken.

Ken,

It is CBWPS only and usually access to the tower hide is restricted to members. When a rarity turns up we do open the reserve to non-members but there are two problems. The first is parking. There is only room for about 5 cars in the pull-in and lay-by so we ask the neighbouring farmer to open up his field for parking with a small admission for Society funds (£2.00) The second (and greater) problem is that you can only view the sanctuary from the hide so there may be a queue to get in.

Think the conclusion is that this bird is an Adult Little Stint.

No, thats the conclusion of a few people that only looked at my very poor photo's and did not actually see the bird. If this was a bright Little Stint why for instance was the mantle V very faint and almost lacking? and thats just one of many questions. I have never seen a Little that looked like this bird, but I have probably seen as many Red-necked as anyone else in the county.

Excellent set of birds for the airfield Quincol, not long surely till a Buff-breast or upland sand shows up. Nice one.

A large scale movement of Ringed Plover seem to be in full flow at Davidstow Airfield with 150 birds present this morning. Less numbers were noted on the Camel Estuary last weekend.
Is anyone else noting any large movements?

Not large numbers but Steve Madge and I had a few on the move last Sunday including three in a ploughed field at Penlee - a first for both of us up there!

Choughs!!

Hi all,

Last year the RSPB had a chough watching point somewhere in cornwall,
I tried to find info about it this year but couldnt find any.
My question to all you cornwall birders is did they repeat it this year if not why and if so is it still running.
And also if not where would my best chances to see one be without there help.

Cheers

The Chough watchpoint opperated all summer Darryl and has now finished as the Chough family have fledged successfully. The watchpoint is on the lizard just south of lizard village (not too far south though or you'll end up in the sea!).
Chough can be seen fairly easily if you take a coastal walk around the Lands End area. Often some around Porthgwarra too and some of the lizard birds should stay local.
The RSPB website has details of the choughs here - http://www.rspb.org.uk/ourwork/conservation/projects/cornwallchoughs/index.asp
Not sure if the watchpoint will be running next year but keep an eye out on the 'aren't birds brilliant' part of the RSPB website for updates - http://www.rspb.org.uk/brilliant/sites/index.asp.
Thanks. Henerz.

This large (almost GBB size) long winged and legged Gull at Davidstow Airfield today, showing pale window on inner primaries and faintly spotted white rump. I think could be poss juvenile Yellow-legged? but tertials look odd.

No sign this morning of the Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Davidstow Airfield but juvenile Sanderling with the Dunlin and Ringed Plover, plus 30+ Yarrellii and 2 Alba Wagtails.
Some Buff-breasted are very tame and approachable, but the bird Mark Worden found on 9th Sept appears to be quite the opposite.

One or two scarce migrants around this morning with Purple Heron and RB Flicker at Nanjizal, RC Starling at St Levan, Wryneck at PG, Pec Sand still at Walmsley and a possible Greenish Warb at Pendeen. Waders seem to be picking up at Hayle too. More reports for today on the website HERE
