Apparently the two birders involved were from Cardiff Bird Club. Also someone admitted to flushing the bird so that others could get a good view of it! Jeezus!

I've heard nothing else. Seems a strange report for a tricky to ID bird without a specific location reported.
Possible sites could include land south of the town towards Maenporth along the coastal area. Can't see it being at Swanpool. College Res is good for buzzards and the farmland around there or to the south may be harbouring the bird. Needle in a haystack springs to mind unless we get a bit more info!
There has been a pale Buzzard at Stithians for yonks which is a possibililty!
Thanks. Henerz.

Not heard anything else either. There have been some strange reports from Stithians recently, 4 Garganey, RN Duck (Pochard!)??

I see some photos have been published on a new snowy owl thread of some dickhead flushing it!

Morning all

If anyone would be able to help with transport enquieries (whats the easiest way to get to Zennor from Carbis bay?) It would be a great help. I shalll be visiting the area for three days (11th-13th) staying near to the railway station by Carbis Bay, and will be limited to travel, by foot or (presumably?) bus. I know the bus station is nearby to the railyway station, but havent yet found any timetables that let me know how regularly the busses run.

If anyone allready in the area, is going for another look at the Owl, or simply passing the spot, dont hezitate to drop me a message. The walk back to Carbis bay doesent look too far on the map...

Many thanks

David

Hi David. I'm using public transport to get there on the 10th so sadly can't meet up with you on your dates.
The only real way to do it is bus/train to St Ives and then catch the western greyhound bus #508.
Timetable here - http://www.westerngreyhound.com/route_pdf2/508.pdf.
Ask the driver to stop just before Zennor (presumerably where all the twitchers cars are) and follow the directions given on the snowy owl thread which I think is walk south for 400yards and then fork left for 400yards towards Trendrine Hill.
Snowy still there mid morning today! Hen Harrier and Merlin also seen recently.
Worth noting that the bus should go via Halsetown on the way back to St Ives so keep an eye out for the Cattle Egrets near the road there. Bonus birds!
Hope this helps.
Thanks. Henerz.

Cheers Henerz, much appreciated. Am coming down via train from Bedford on the 10th (left it out from the dates as its pretty much a full day travelling...) so meeting up may not be out of the question. If only I had considered the railway connections when the Diver was on the Hayle! At least I know for next time...

No official reports today of the Snowy Owl on RBA, has anyone seen it today or has it done one and gone?
Thanks. Henerz.

Tony Blunden had a Waxwing at The Lizard village yesterday, It was only there briefly. Tony tells me there's a great shortage of berries down there so it may well have moved on. It's certainly very hard to find a bush with any berries around Helston, though there are still a few cotoneasters at Tesco. Keep looking, they're here somewhere (Waxwings I mean)!

I witnessed the sad end to a Grey Phalarope at Gwithian today! Caught and killed by a Common Buzzard! The beast snook in low over the main pool, its primaries touching the water as it got close to the Phal, then Wham! The buzzard killed it! Incredible to watch! Theres photos of the incident on Cornwall Birding website!

No sign of the Snowy Owl today in very windy conditions and its only gonna get worse tomorrow.

Unbelievable action there Paul. Top effort to get in on camera too.
I've not often seen a Buzzard catch much more than a common or garden worm out and about so this is something else!
Shame about the Snowy doing one but it might just be hunkered down in the heather for now.
Nice one. Henerz.

Why does a Black-headed Gull have a brown head...

I've seen Buzzards using the same tactics here on the Camel, in the late Spring, catching Shelducklings.

Amazing photos of the buzzard snatching the phalarope !! Not sure of the exact details but the Snowy Owl has been refound at Zennor mid-day today, so it is still there, though the weather is making life difficult. Ray Roche

Thanks Ray, according to Will Bowell on another thread it was reported by David Roche. Any relation? I drove up there at first light this morning and the weather was horrendous, driving SW drizzle and thick fog. Cleared up alot in the afternoon though. Hope it stays til the weekend.

There is a lot of Sprat and Sand Eel in St Ives/Carbis Bay at the moment causing a bit of a feeding frenzie that is well worth keeping an eye on. I had 3 RB Mergs in CarbisBay an a close inshore Sooty Shearwater sat on the sea off St Ives island this morning.

Oh and the Buzzard Photos on the website have been kindly enhanced in Photoshop by Matt Sallis (Duncan Jeggo also did the same) Thanks to both!
