Weathers a bit changeable at the moment but still a few bits about. Drake Ring Necked Duck still reported at Stithians lake this morning and the female Blue Winged Teal is still at Walmsley Sanctuary. On this day in the county last year there was Bonaparte's Gull at Hayle, Montagu's Harrier at Croft Pascoe, Woodchat Shrike at Porth Joke and a Purple Heron at Marazion Marsh!

Lizard Brown Shrike

Hi folks

Just in case it's slipped people's attention, the Brown Shrike recorded on the Lizard (26-27th Sep 2009) has fairly recently been accepted by the BBRC (see here).

At the time, its identity caused a great deal of debate. I submitted it, stating that record wasn't 100% certain. The BBRC, however, appear to be sufficiently happy with the weight of evidence.

I believe this was the first for Cornwall.

Cheers,

Ilya

An evening trip to Kenidjack Valley yesterday resulted in a reeling Grasshopper Warbler across the bridge from the last house, but perhaps a rarer sight was two female Red Deer climbing out of the valley and onto the golf course. Apparently, they have been around for a couple of months. Did anyone else know?

I hadn't heard, but it looks as though Phil Clarke saw them yesterday evening as well.

More info on Red Deer!

Since I saw them I have spoken to my neighbour who also saw them some months ago by the lighthouse. He saw them in particularly bad light conditions and assumed they were Roe Deer (his views were distant and brief). He has since found out that a local deer farmer from Newbridge believes that the deer is a pregnant female that escaped from his farm some time ago and that has now given birth to what is now an almost full grown fawn. Certainly one is slightly smaller than the other and, when I saw them, what I now believe to be the mother climbed onto the golf course first while the youngster waited for the all clear.

The lady who lives in the last house says she has seen them several times for the past two months.

One got trapped at Heamoor School two weeks ago Steve. We got called but it had run into the fence a few times and its lower jaw was broken. We had to call out a vet to put it out of its misery unfortunately. I've also had a huge Stag with a full set of antlers in a field near my place at Connor Downs. Once before christmas and then my dad saw it in February this year.

Large fall of common migrants in west cornwall yesterday. 69 Blackcaps and 76 Willow warblers trapped and ringed at Nanjizal! Don't suppose there will be much of that today in this weather but at least the conditions kept the Black-winged Stilt at Walmsley!

I have been sent a couple of pictures of a Gannet sat on islands off Beeny Cliff. There has been rumours for a number of years of a single bird in this area during the summer months but this is the first confirmed record.

If anyone else has any information, please forward.

Best wishes,

Red-rumped Swallow briefly this evening at Marazion Marsh. My mate found it, but I just couldn't get on it. Gutted as it would have been a UK lifer! :-C

Saw it this afternoon, it's hanging out with the mixed Dunlin/Ringed Plover flock, though it was being pushed around a bit by kite-surfers in the bay...

Nice one Will, glad you connected, shame it wasn't a smart male, but perhaps I'm just getting greedy!
Photos now on the news page.

Took some finding given the weather conditions and disturbance, got good views in the end though. Marazion has somewhat redeemed itself after the RR Swallow last week!

Shame the council aren't doing anything about the dog walkers! I have'nt seen the Kentish Plover at Marazion BTW. (The afternoon sighting is credited to me on the cbwps website?)

That's because you're the one who told me about the sighting! I note that you have since edited your initial post to add "(per CB Bird Reports)", whatever that means.
The bird is still present today, if anyone's interested.
Incidentally, talking about the council, is everyone aware that that the council are proposing to stop all parking along the sea front opposite the reserve and make it into a cycle track? If like me, you think this is a bad idea, you might like to send an e mail to object to losing the parking spaces to the council planning dept

Cheers

Dave
