That's because you're the one who told me about the sighting! I note that you have since edited your initial post to add "(per CB Bird Reports)", whatever that means.
The bird is still present today, if anyone's interested.
Incidentally, talking about the council, is everyone aware that that the council are proposing to stop all parking along the sea front opposite the reserve and make it into a cycle track? If like me, you think this is a bad idea, you might like to send an e mail to object to losing the parking spaces to the council planning dept

Cheers

Dave

Arghhh, no parking? Outrageous!:C:C

Your link to the planning dept doesn't seem t work for me, Dave, I'll try to get through some other way.

Nice one Will, glad you connected, shame it wasn't a smart male, but perhaps I'm just getting greedy!
Photos now on the news page.
Dave

Looks like I got my wish sooner than I dared hope. (Should've wished for a Sandplover!) The female Kentish Plover has been joined by a nice male this evening, in front of the old coastguards hut, just west of the Station House.
Photos on the daily sightings page.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to technology! The planner who seems to be in charge is Andy Roberts on [email protected]

Dave

Hi Dave,
Do you know the reason why they are thinking of removing the parking? Is it to do with camper vans parking there overnight or something?

Adam

PS I'm severely gripped off by your wonderful Kentish Plovers that you've got down there!

Hi Adam,
Initially a councillor told the Cornishman that it was to get rid of the overnight parking, so I e mailed to the planners and told them that while I might agree with their objective there were several simpler and cheaper ways of dealing with the problem.
Five months later, I had heard nothing, but saw another article in the Cornishman, so I e mailed again. This time they at least replied, but had changed their tune and now it was all to do with safety of pedestrians and cyclists. So I e mailed them back and demolished their flimsy arguements re safety.
They then replied saying it was all to do with their Local Transport Plan and part of a National initiative to provide cyclepaths to encourage more cyclists. I pointed out that extending a cyclepath by 100 plus metres was hardly going to encourage more cyclists. It was only then that they revealed that it was part of a bigger plan to link Penzance to Marazion. When I pointed out that it would be useless unless they could get past the dunes and over Red River, and asked how they proposed to acheive that, they claimed they hadn't thought about that yet. Unbelieveable, planners who don't plan ahead!
Any how don't get me started or I'll rant on all day. I honestly think that the council are determined to push this through, for whatever reason, despite their claims to be in consultation.

Both Kentish Plovers still showing well Friday afternoon on the beach by the lifeguard hut - very nice! No disturbance from dogs which was a bonus. :t:

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong but this is the first record for Cornwall since the one day birds at Hayle Estuary in April 2009.

One wonders how many may have been missed or overlooked, I'll be checking Plovers very carefully.

I'm pretty sure you're right about the last Kentish Plovers in the county, found by Derek Julian if my memory serves me correctly.

Given reasonable views, the id is relatively straight forward, so hopefully not too many have been overlooked. However I dare say some must slip through unseen given the length of coastline we have and the scarcity of competent observers. Even when you knew where the birds were, if they stood motionless they were remarkably hard to pick out.

Male still present this morning.

Thanks for that. I e-mailed the bod whose e-mail address you supplied complaining about the proposal and I'll let you know if/when I hear back from him. In these times of hardship, I do expect that raising extra money from the Pay & Display is behind this all.

The Hayle Estuary birds were present on April 19th 2009, another pair was found at Long Rock Beach on May 25th 2009.

Thanks again for your needless comments Dave. I have PM'd you, can you please do the same in future. CB Bird Reports refers to reports that come from Cornwall Birding website. CB=Cornwall Birding. Hope that clarifies that for you.

In case anyone is interested, I got a reply back from the planning bod, who said:

"Thank you for your email. Consultation was carried out during October 2011 and we received a large number of responses both in favour of the scheme and against. The proposals are primarily aimed at providing a safer and more pleasant route for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and disabled people, however it will also have the effect of removing the car parking that currently takes place alongside the sea wall. The consultation feedback is still being assessed and it is hoped that a decision will be finalised soon. I will update you on this decision once it has been made"
