Has any one else noticed the nicotine coloured staining on the grey armour of their Zeiss SF binoculars, not unlike the staining on the green armour of the Zeiss FLs when the rubber bands of the objective covers were fitted Also like the older FLs is proving impossible to remove and this on the first afternoon of use one can clearly see the out line of the fingers and part of the palm.

One thing for sure they could never be sold as mint,Oh! and my hands were clean to begin with!
Also I have tried all of my usual cleaning aids, but , this problem has them all beat.

Do you mean you have left hand-prints on the armour? And your hands were clean?

SFs have been tested for days in the field by loads of invited people, without reports of this and I have seen pairs of them that have been very well used and none of them showed any stains at all.

I've been using my SF daily for a couple of months now and no stains. A few of those days were for several hours at a time so there was time for oil to get on my hands. Dust has stuck to the sides of the barrels a couple of times after resting them on logs and such, but it wiped right off. I have not used the lens covers so no comments on that.

My first thought was sun screen lotion, but you said your hands were clean. Some off that stuff is hard to wash off your hands.

How do you store them when not being used? Could they be picking something up from a storage container?

Thanks to all for the replies.
Only got them today so very little use.
I am known for keeping my optics in mint condition and my hands were clean so was quite surprised to see the brown finger marks. Looking at them now under artificial light they look ok,will see what they look like in the morning.

Glad no one else has had this problem, must have toxic sweat.!

Nice joke about toxic sweat but I wonder, are you diabetic?

I am and my sweat is way more acidic than a normal person. For example my sweat eats pit-marks in normal metal spectacles and I have to have titanium frames to avoid this. So I wonder whether diabetic-sweat could explain your finger-marks.

However I have used SFs for a few days with slightly sweaty hands and there were absolutely no marks.

Lee, No I am not diabetic. The marks can still be seen, but, not so prominent as yesterday I shall have to get myself a pair of white gloves.
Emailed Zeiss yesterday saying more or less what I put on bird forum and if they new of any cleaning agents that might shift it,not had a reply as yet!
Not a big problem in the scheme of things,
Shall have to spend more time looking through them and not quite so much time looking at them! They are so handsome though.

Actually, as a Zeiss SF owner, and a habitual cigar smoker, the smokey colour and oily texture of this binocular suits me quite well! :smoke:

Its OK we all realise that 24 hours of darkness for six months followed by 24 hours of unrelenting sun for the next six months can cause strange patterns of behaviour.... :eek!:

I have this similar problem on my 8x42's. The stains are only visible in natural light but as a result of using Mr Muscle cleaner most have disappeared.
The whole casing is poor to say the least as marks very easily. Had swarovskis before - build quality far superior!
I would be interested to see what Zeiss say - if they reply!

Hi Juliet,
Pleased I am not the only one seeing these marks though sorry for you of course. I also only see them in natural light.
After trying my extensive cleaning products it was proving hopeless until I tried toothpaste(colgate max white one) in my case, used with a toothbrush I have completely got rid of them.BUT,its something you need to do after every outing if like me I find the marks irritating.
I also know we are not alone as I have seen photos with the same finger marks and palm prints.

As yet I have not heard back from Zeiss!!

For a £2000 product I would have liked better dirt ,grease resistant armour or maybe the price you pay for not keeping with black!!

Yesterday I was birding for 4,hours and of course it was very hot and sweaty, but, no grease marks on the bins the reason being I kept my cycling mitts on comfortable too!!

Do you smoke? Could it be the nicotine coming out in your sweat.
