Despite some unpleasant experiences on the associated activities I'm glad I did the 7 day tour as we saw some good birds (esp in Tortuguero -more to follow) & generally had a good time. Four out of five of my party were non-birders & had to be 'catered for' but there was still plenty of stuff to keep me occupied. I did some dedicated birding (day) trips the second week with Carlos Jimenez. Carlos could certainly organise a proper Cano Negro trip but as the early morning boat trip is the most productive it is better to stay a night in the area (there is at least one decent lodge) -catching the morning boat as a day trip would require a 3am start from the coastal hotel driving on roads better not negotiated in the dark! :eek!: The best whalewatching in Costa Rica is from the Osa peninsula area well to the south of the Guanacaste hotels. The season there is quite long (mainly Humpbacks) & the birding on Osa/ Corcovado is out of this world. If you can get a cheap flight to San Jose or Liberia then it is possible to get an internal flight to Osa where there are a couple of good lodges.
