Hi again All, Some invaluable info. here - and it seems rain hasn't disrupted your trip, Steve, as much as some who have been in Dec. Rioja, Like you I pick holidays with my non-birding wife in mind. (We have been to Mexico on an All-inclusive package: I loved it & would go again; she thought it OK & wouldn't. The Gambia: I loved it; she didn't much. Goa: we both loved it & both would go back. Sri Lanka: we both liked it, but the accom. on our three day self-arranged extra was not to Mrs.H's liking. Costa Rica: both loved it & can't wait to go back) I got my own flights to CR - good deal (Manchester via Newark) & used a travel co. because the accom. was cheaper through them (Peak season - all the travel co.s seem to pre-book everything, but non-peak season should be OK to book your own). We hired a 4x4 after we had been taken to Tortuguero & back to the nearest pick-up point. Then travelled to Serapiqui, Carara & coast & then to Poas. I think getting a flight-only option - or even flight & accom. - with 1st Choice, then hiring a vehicle & going to other places for part of the holiday would be a cheap option (4x4 hire very reasonable). We would like to do Monteverde & Arenal for a start - both reasonably close to the NW Pacific resorts. I don't like to use guides - very expensive & I like to bird alone - & I might have missed one or two things, but managed OK. (My trip reort is on BF.) H
