My wife & kids feel that Costa Rica was one of their best holidays ever though my son regrets not having done more diving. There was lots to see & do whilst there were more than enough birds to keep the old man happy! ;) What did you think of Tortuguero ( the next instalment contains my thoughts on the place)? Out of San Jose driving (I say this as a passenger & not the driver!) did not seem particularly demanding. However many of the birding sites we visited were up rough tracks along minor roads with no signs to indicate where to go. On birding trips with our guide quite a few of the birds were spotted from the vehicle by myself as clearly the rough road conditions frequently demanded our driver/guide's full attention! -I would have missed these completely if I were driving & besides if I were honest I would have to admit to finding driving in unknown territory a little stressful. I enjoy & prefer birding alone in areas where I have little chance of getting lost but much prefer to use a knowledgeable guide to quickly & comfortably access the better birding sites & to maximize on the birds seen. Our guide was excellent company & consistently delivered the goods. Okay he wasn't cheap but I feel now looking back that this was money well-spent. Without Carlos we would not have gotten to some of the sites we visited (-he got us there for first light) whilst undoubtedly my trip list & collection of bird images would have been VERY much poorer accordingly. Perhaps we were lucky with our choice of guide but Carlos certainly knew his stuff, was suitably equipped & was clearly someone who enjoyed birding -which was his passion as much as his livelihood. He was a good guy & would definitely feature strongly in any future CR birding trip I might plan (assuming he was available).
