County Yearlist

Hi all

I'm after going through the yearlist and there are still a few wrinkles in it.
The following are missing

White-fronted Goose
Pintail
Common Scoter
Golden Plover (Grey and Ringed Plover both added twice)
Curlew Sandpiper
Black-tailed Godwit
Greenshank
American Herring Gull
Razorbill
Black Guillemot
Woodpigeon
Linnet
Crossbill
Bullfinch

I've inputted them all into an Excel spreadsheet and its added up to a total of 132 rather than 118?
It may be an easier option of going with the excel file as it eliminates the possibility of duplication.
The complete Irish list is in the first and second columns (English and Scientific names), the county list next (c.287, check if I've missed anything) and finally in the last column the 2009 yearlist. Unfortunately I cannot attach excel file here for some reason. If anyone wants the file contact me privately at [email protected]
I have however put the results into a word file which should be attached.

Count list 133 - Green Sandpiper - had a reliable report of one along a stream just north of Tuam today (Jen Fisher & Dervla O'Dowd).
The usual 1st-winter Med Gull in Rusheen Bay this afternoon.

Green Sandpipers were present annually for many years in old Tuam sugar factory ponds long since gone. This was sited on the north side of the town. Its interesting that the bird still can be found in the general area.

Green sands dont need much. We have them well inland in Ashbourne co. meath annually from september through the winter. Present on small streams and ditches, adjacent floodwater and the golf course water hazzards!

The Waxwings were still present about twenty minutes ago on Inchagoill Road in Newcastle. They're feeding on berries on what appears to be the only tree with berries on that road. They occasionally fly up to the tops of the line of trees next to the back of the hospital. Nice pic Tom.

Yesterday afternoon I saw a flock of 28 white fronts land on Lough Aclogher in Lettercraffroe Wood near Oughterard. Does anyone have any idea if this flock is one of the ones also using Lough Corrib or is separate? Seems unlikely to be one of Corrib flocks. This report below mentions a flock of 24 in Connemara on page 8. Same birds? http://www.wwt.org.uk/research/monitoring/pdf/Greenland White-fronted Goose Study report 2007-08.pdf

Out at Rahasane on Saturday with PC. Water levels are very high.

Good numbers of waterfowl but at a distance. About 5000 golden plover mulling around with no-where to land and all the usual waders. About 70 curlew also present on the fields around the turlough and 2 little egret at the borders. Blackwits and a handful of pintail too. Nice to see about 30 Redshanks there as well as 2 differnt pairs of raven displaying. Several hundred lapwing spread all over the shoreline and about 60 dunlin mixed in with everything else.

Went today to try to see those waxwings, even spotted the most likely tree for them to be in but no joy : (

BrosnaTom - interesting to hear of your goose flock...I went to check out their roost just a few evenings ago and had a flock of 35-40 arrive from the south. The roost site is not far from where you had yours, but not easily accessed, though the whole area can be viewed from a distance. I gather this flock feeds on the bog and is independent from the Corrib flocks, and haven't heard of any other Connemara flocks.

Had a look at the turlough at Turloughmore, beside the N63 Roscommon Road today - hundreds of birds on it, mostly lapwing, curlew, dunlin, wigeon & teal. There seem to be plenty of floods & turloughs full of waders and wildfowl out in the back of beyond. Rahasane and Belclare are probably the most well known, but does anyone have any other favourites?

Hi John

I was also out at Rahasane on Saturday. Most of the Shoveler and Pintail seem to have left. There were probably 500 - 1000 Shoveler and a half that amount of Pintail out there two weeks back. Where have they all gone?? c.80 Greater Scaup on Lough Atalia, virtually no diving duck and very few Coot at Loughrea, same goes for Angliham, nothing at Belclare nor Oranmore and 25 GWFs at Rostaff the best. Where are all the Green-winged Teals, American Wigeons, etc.?? It certainly not for the lack of looking! I'd love to check out some of these turloughs that aren't regularly checked. I went to a few "lakes/turloughs" marked on the OS but all either proved to be overgrown, rank marshes with no open water or I just couldn't get access to them. Now I know why I spend to much time looking at gulls in Galway because there's hardly anything else to look at in the winter here;)
Forsters Tern down on the beach at Nimmo's yesterday btw.

Good to hear access is difficult Paul. Who knows what's lurking on that massive expanse of bog between Oughterard and Rossaveal. Suppose the Snowy Owl last year and the Ring-necks on Lough Acogga show that there may be a few surprises out there.

Had a quick look for the Waxwings this afternoon but no luck. Having said that I only had a drive by look as parking is atrocious in that area during the day. Possibly still knocking around.

Tim Griffin call me with his sightings for today

1 Surf Scoter at Silver Strand
6 Iceland Gulls
1 Adult Kumliens Gull
1 Forsters Tern with 6 Sandwich Terns on Claddagh Beach
4 Waxwings at Newcastle

Just a note regarding the Waxwings there is a Mistle Thrush giving them a hard time and flushing the birds to the tall trees on the hospital side of the road.
