Seems to be a good year for Long-eared Owls. Had four sets (three threes and a four) of owlets begging along a 5km stretch of road near Rosscahill last night.

Hi Tony. Roseate's are extremely rare on the west coast as you know but I would be surprised if there isn't a pair or two knocking about Connemara/the Aran Islands most years. Dermot had an adult (ringed on both legs as was mine) out on Inis Meain on 28/06/2009 and it looks a likely spot. There are, however, loads of other likely spots between Inveran and Slyne head so it's just impossible to monitor all the sites on an annual basis. Where I had the Roseate has a nice post-breeding tern roost which tends to suck in birds from Inis Meain and Inis Oirr. Bound to pick up something nice in it eventually. If enough time is put in I'm sure a Caspian or Elegant will pop in for five minutes before buggering off again! It's the same site that had the Stone Curlew and AGP last August so it'll definitely get a bit more attention this autumn.

ATB,

Aonghus.

Was in Galway for the past week manning the BirdWatch Ireland stall at the Volvo Ocean Race. Checked the Nimmo's Pier area at least twice a day. A regular Common Tern or two showing well was about the best I could manage there.

A couple of Spotted Flycatchers & some flyover Crossbills North East of Woodford on Friday morning was nice though. Quite a few pairs of Great-crested Grebes with well grown young at Loughrea also.

For my sins I agreed to help collate the Scarce Migrants report for the
years 2007 and 2008 for the/a forthcoming volume of Irish Birds. It is
hoped to have the report written up by the end of August (deadline is end
of August!) but preferably much sooner than that. While much information
is available online and in various published regional reports there are
noticeable gaps in the records. Records are noticeably lacking for counties
Donegal, Mayo (apart from Kilcummin Head and the Mullet) and, surprisingly,
Wexford. If anyone has any records for any of the species listed below for
the years 2007 and 2008 - especially those records which are not in the
public domain - I'd be most appreciative if they could forward them on to
me at either of the following e-mail addresses;
Aonghus.O'Donaill AT AHG.GOV.IE
or;
Aonghuso AT hotmail.com

The list of species for which records are required is as follows;

Bewick's Swan
Pink-footed Goose
Dark-bellied Brent
Green-winged Teal
Garganey
Velvet Scoter
Smew
Goosander
Quail
Black-throated Diver
Red-necked Grebe
Slavonian Grebe
Cory's Shearwater
Great Shearwater
Sooty Shearwater
Balearic Shearwater
Leach's Petrel
Marsh Harrier
Osprey
Little Stint
Pectoral Sandpiper
Curlew Sandpiper
Spotted Redshank
Green Sandpiper
Wood Sandpiper
Grey Phalarope
Pomarine Skua
Sabine's Gull
Mediterranean Gull
Little Gull
Turtle Dove
Short-eared Owl
Nightjar
Hoopoe
Tree Pipit
Yellow Wagtail
Waxwing
Black Redstart
Redstart
Ring Ouzel
Lesser Whitethroat
Yellow-browed Warbler
Wood Warbler
Firecrest
Pied Flycatcher
Carrion Crow
Twite
Lapland Bunting
Snow Bunting

I've collated the records for Galway so I'm particularly interested in records people may have for counties OTHER than Galway.

Regards,

Aonghus O' Donaill.

Kane Bride's ringing blog - http://birdringing.blogspot.ie/ - mentions the recovery in Norway of a common gull he ringed at Nimmo's Pier.

"A Common gull caught at Nimmo’s Pier in Galway, Ireland on 03/01/2011 was recaptured by ringers on 22/06/2012 at Breiavatnet, Stavanger in Norway, 1113km ENE in 536 days. The ringers also colour ringed the bird – white J5VP."
