Hi all.
New to this. Just wondering what bird this is? Think it might be linnet or twite. It has always baffled me and i'd just like to know for sure. There's always dozens of them flying around my house going to a field that had maize in it. Last year there was always a complete white bird of the same size flying in with the same flock as this year. Haven't noticed it this year but haven't really been looking. They're only around in winter these birds. Thanks in advance. I live pretty near the coast.

Yeah breffni that really fits the description. Remarkable. Didn't ever get in my scope, just through bins. That arctic redpoll is quite similar in size/shape to twite -so could've been that. Saw regular redpoll last week outside my backdoor feeding on ash tree. Live in termonfeckin/ c-head area.

From what I have seen of them this winter, they seem to become much more mobile for about 2 days before they disappear to a new location.
It will be interesting to see therefore if they depart the Tom Bellew Avenue location (where they have been for the past 10 days or so) over the coming days.

I am heading to Dundalk tomorrow.Has anybody seen/looked for the Waxwings recently?

Peter, my observations above proved to by correct again, as the waxwings departed Tom Bellew Avenue the following day.
I have searched all previous know locations and other likely areas this past 9 days but have seen nothing. I have no doubt they are probably in some hawtorn bush close to the town - locating it is another issue!

PS Welcome to the forum Dony

Hi all

I ordered several birds books on the internet last week and for some unknown reason I ordered two of the same book. To make matters worse when they arrived yesterday I discovered I already had the two books (albeit with a different cover). :eek!:
Here's the book here http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/displayProductDetails.do?sku=6106522
Before I send them back, I thought I'd trow it on here and see if anyone was interested in them. RRP is Stg£15.99, but they were on offer when I got them, so I will let them go at what I paid for them - €8.20.
First come first serve!

Redpolls are complicated with several species/sub-species intergrading from brown to very plae like the arctic (The Arctic Redpoll, Carduelis hornemanni (subspecies C. h. hornemanni (Greenland Arctic Redpoll) and C. h. exilipes (Hoary Redpoll)), Common Redpoll, Carduelis flammea (Nominate C. f. flammea (Mealy Redpoll); subspecies C. f. islandica and C. f. rostrata (Greenland Redpoll)), Lesser Redpoll, Carduelis cabaret).

Mealy redpolls have turned up along that coastline fairly regularly in the past and should stand out a bit - photo of one taken at cruisetown here: http://www.birdsireland.com/pages/rare_bird_news/2006/january_photos.html

Intriguing! Could've been any of these then I suppose. You could pick it out though in a flash with naked eye as flock flew by.My father even commented on it and he knows nothing about birds. Had a good look at flock(around 40 I suppose) today and didn't see any strange additions to it just greenfinch and tree sparrow.

Well spotted Peter.

As far as I know they were colour ringing Waxwing in Scotland last winter and one turned up in Northern Ireland as far as I can remember.
It might be worth posting this on the Northern Ireland local patch.
