Yesterday a large flotilla of displaying shags off cooley point - at least 35 birds. Also a scattering of red throated divers and great northern divers...

The weekend outing went down very well despite the weather, particularly on Sunday when about 40 of us headed into a virtual easterly gale...those who stuck it out to the end we were finally rewarded with an adult red-necked grebe opposite the harbout at Carlingford, a great ending to the weekend.

Two 1st winter Iceland gulls yesterday 11am at Clogherhead harbour, hanging in the wind at the harbour wall. Views down to 20ft - much better than freezing your n**ts off on Cruisetown Strand!

Is Carlingford lough protected from dredging, there seems to be 2 ships on the lough try to deepen the shipping lanes into Warrenpoint. Would this not affect the eco system of the lough, You can view one of them here http://www.aisliverpool.org.uk/shiptrail.php?mmsi=210125000

This is where the locals fish for Shellfish of some kind http://www.aisliverpool.org.uk/shiptrail.php?mmsi=250000264&map=-1&date=20090129

Hi Gareth - the astonishing fact is that Carlingofrd Lough does not enjoy any protection whatsoever, excepting the mudflats around the edges. It is a virtual marine dead zone. The main biodiversity is the mussel aquaculture - the seed mussels being illegally nicked from Dunaney, Salterstown and other protected areas to feed the aquaculture in the lough...

Eanna Ni Lamhna's talk in the Spirit Store at 8pm this evening IS GOING AHEAD - Eanna is currently braving her way up the M1 but the room has been heated since this afternoon. Hope to see a good turnout for this one, excepting the good folk from Drogheda, which has apprently been hit by an avalanche!

Total of 18 waxwings in a garden just 300 yards south of the Xerox entrance on the dublin road going south. They are in a garden with a large decorative tree with copious red berries...

Here are some pictures of a female Chaffinch that I found sitting shocked in a plant pot probably after escaping from the clutches of a cat. I just carried it inside and then put it in an old cat cage until it eventually recovered an hour and a half later. I knew it was shocked as so still and heart racing and it didnt appear to to be ill at all other than that. The last picture is outside on paving stones just seconds before it flew away.

Very good Dolce! Birds often just need a few hours of calm to get over a shock!

Yesterday Aidan Kelly had the red-necked grebe off Carlingford and the dowitcher between the two bridges near high tide.

Bought one of those next box cameras in Aldi Newry road, seems to be well made. I should have a live stream up and running for the summer months so that anyone can check in on the next site via the web.
I am going to swap it with a box that has been used for years so hopefully they will use it straight away.

I think this might have been a Fieldfare as the black on both sides of chest were very noticeable. It came with what I think are Redwings and will post pictures. You can see the size of it beside the pane of glass in neighbours window. I noticed that the Mistle Thrush kept returning to the Hawthorn tree often when they were in tree too and I wonder was he protecting his food from them.
