Corvid pair killing and eating adult Lapwing During a walk and stop off at the bird hide at Pegwell Bay (East Kent) today I had a fantastic sighting of two corvids taking a Lapwing. This isn't something I've seen before and it really surprised me. A mixed flock of Lapwings and Golden Plover took to the air and it was soon apparant that there were two corvids on the scene. The pair of crows (probably carrion or maybe ravens) then managed to pick off a bird from the flock (turned out to be a lapwing) ... seeming to work together to do this ... the lapwing was separated and then forced downwards by the two crows (rather like mobbing behaviour). Eventually they had the bird on the ground and whilst one crow was pecking at the lapwing the other one was jumping on it and struggling to hold it down. Then the struggling stopped and the two birds began pecking feathers out. Afterwards the crows took it in turns to fly off from the scene and return...seemingly moving bits of their prey to other areas...most odd and something I haven't seen before.
