It's a pity birders don't get statutory holidays for the last week of April and all of May... we're all a bit of a mess if we have to work at this time of year!

Country Club April 27, 2011
Place was pumping with birds. Maybe not species, but definantly numbers. Strong north front arrived today after the short drizzle last night. I think this was bringing down the migrants and/or holding them there. Strong north wind all day (30km/h+) Like yesterday, I didn't even get close to covering the entire area like I usually do before the sun went down. Had 1.5 hours of daylight after work.

Very quick 45 minutes today. Cloudy and light rain. Only covered a small corner before I had to leave. There would have been much much more. Warblers dripping off trees today. I tried in vain to get a Yellow-browed Warbler out of the large building where I work this morning. It managed to get in through an open door. I would like to know just how many are in Jinshitan at the moment. Thousands. Saw a Stubtail in the tiny landscaped area of my apartment complex tonight and a large group of Pallas's Leaf Warblers. Sore neck birding for the quick 45 minutes. Unbelievable numbers of individuals. I would love to have 5 people and spend an entire day in that place just to see what is actually there at the moment. The place is a magnet.

Rescued two birds from nets in the Country Club today. The Siskin this morning and the Dusky Thrush this afternoon. First visit from 5:00-7:45 am and then again from 2:00-4:30 pm. Unfortunately the Sikin died shortly after I cut it free as it had been hanging by its neck for quite a while before I got there. I had my daughter with me for the afternoon visit and she was so angry seeing the Thrush that she destroyed the whole net while I was cutting the Thrush free. I hesitated to do it because of the relationship I have with owner of the place but I turned around to see that rocks moved that were holding it up and the entire thing flat on the ground. I know its illegal but it's a bit of a tricky situation with the owner of the place who is very very nice to me in letting me bird there whenever I want.

Warm weather arrived yesterday afternoon and today was quite warm with almost no wind. Many of the numbers in the country club left last night. I went to both places today with my daughter so not that serious of birding. We did do some tadpole collecting and flower picking, however!

Love the whimbrel in a field and the tree full of siskins! Was the pheasant foraging? Quite an interesting posture! (I had some of my best views of one yesterday.) Nice falcon too.

Rain yesterday and fog most of today. The internet was saying 18 degrees but it was 10 or under here in the famous Jinshitan fog/mist. Some new stuff arrived despite 6 large busses of people having some kind of gathering inside with loud music. This is from a 2 hour afternoon visit with my daughter.
No pheasants seen or heard!

Spike and Terry arrived today for 10 days or so at Laotieshan. I can't wait to hear what they get there and am green with envy. We plan to hook up this Saturday for a trip up the Yellow Sea coast through some great shorebird habitat. I will post their findings here as well if that's ok with them. Had a small window of time today for a quick trip to the country club. Heavy rain and overcast the last two days and today was clear and quite warm. 20 or more degrees in the afternoon.

Excellent hour today after work. Didn't get very far as a lot happening including my first life bird in a while. White-winged Tern. Had the feeling that we just scratched the surface today in the short hour there. I didn't even get to the main areas because of all the activity.
A colleague of mine was along yesterday and today and has seen all 5 north-east Asian Egret species on two outings in two days!
I have plans to visit again tomorrow from 5-7 a.m. and Terry and Spike will be there in the afternoon. Check Terry's blog linked in the post above for their list and write up about their day today. Streaked Shearwater and Russet Sparrow would both be life birds for me right in my backyard! I am a mess:eek!:
Please check the tern photos and correct if I am mistaken. I have seen whiskered in Cambodia but never here so have no experience with summer birds.
