Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports (1 Viewer)

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds August 24, 2015

Had some morning birding time there today. 62 Chinese Egrets in the area where the main river empties into the bay is certainly noteworthy.

Camera Trap August 27, 2015

Went out at lunch today and checked the camera trap. Was delighted by the photos below! I've had 1 Wild Boar months ago but there was always a bit of question about it being released or it accidentally escaping from somewhere. This is pretty good proof they are breeding in the area. My friend saw a deer while mountain biking a couple weeks ago and I'm waiting for that on the trap. Another Amur Hedgehog seen below also.

Great in-flights, Tom! I need to make a trip down to Dawa City to see if the wet lands have any more than the few I am seeing here on the edge of Panjin City.

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds August 31, 2015

Had barely an hour there yesterday. LOTS of birds left there because I didn't have enough time. The Grey-headed Lapwing is a first for the ponds which brings the total for this small birding site up to 269 species. I had time to move quickly through the fresh water areas only. One of those days that I wished I had 4-5 hours to take it all in.

Trapped in mist ***s
Saw Terry's post in FB couple of days ago. Good to see the Yellow-breasted Bunting. One more question to ya Tom, Do you have any breeding Eurasian Oystercatcher's up there?(including previous years)

Eurasian Oystercatcher status

Dev, see the attachment for the times i have see Eurasian Oystercatcher around here. From this info, my answer would be "no" but there are a lot of areas around this area and I am only covering a tiny fraction of the habitat.

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds Sept. 3, 2015

Had a very birdy 2+ hours there with my mom last Thursday afternoon. If a person could spend an entire day there during migration! This is only from a corner of the pond areas and we didn't even touch any salt water areas where I'm sure there was a lot more to see.

On a side note, a colleague who is very familiar with Canadian Geese saw a group of 15 geese flyover work the other day. He described them as the same in shape and colour but slightly smaller :eek!: I've had Brent Geese once 1km from where our work is. I'm thinking it's too early for Bean, Greater/Lesser White-fronted, Swan Goose, etc... He said they were flying in V-formation and very low. Interesting....

This comes hot on the heels of the second deer sighting/report right behind my house!

I also had a Tiger Keelback in my classroom all day yesterday and we released it with my Environmental Wildlife course late afternoon. It somehow managed to get into a Science room and was caught there.

Lots happening!

Branta hutchinsii ?

On a side note, a colleague who is very familiar with Canadian Geese saw a group of 15 geese flyover work the other day. He described them as the same in shape and colour but slightly smaller :eek!: I've had Brent Geese once 1km from where our work is. I'm thinking it's too early for Bean, Greater/Lesser White-fronted, Swan Goose, etc... He said they were flying in V-formation and very low. Interesting....

This comes hot on the heels of the second deer sighting/report right behind my house!

Hi Tom,

From the description it sounds like it is Branta hutchinsii which Brazil lists as Lesser Canada Goose and which is also commonly called Cackling Goose. According to Brazil, not common in the region but occasionally reported in Japan and Korea in increasing numbers. Originally bred in NE Russia so could be re-establishing in an old breeding ground.

Just so happens that I got credit for two rare bird sightings while in Kansas as they and Snow Geese migrate through but don't remain. The easier discovery was a crippled Snow Goose remaining over the summer at Wyandotte County Lake in the city limits of Kansas City. It took a couple of sightings before I even noticed that it was usually accompanied by a single Cackling Goose. The large flock of Canada Geese would tolerate them on the periphery but would periodically chase them away. The Snow Goose never regained the ability to fly but despite appearing perfectly healthy the Cackling Goose stayed on at its side.

Besides the size or the Cackling Goose, look for shorter neck and more rounded looking head. There is also a white neck band separating the body and the neck. Some pictures I took this summer attached.

Congratulations on the Terns Tom.

Those geese sound interesting. Hopefully they'll be picked up further south and will spend the winter - I'd even consider twitching them!

Also could remind me about your Brent Goose record - another one I'd love to see in China.

Cheers
Mike

Geese and cuckoos

Owen and Mike, thanks for your thoughts. Yes, I also wish they would hang around or even stay for the winter but this is unlikely given the nature of migration on this peninsula and it only being early September. I had a look yesterday in an area where they could have been if they did stay a day but they weren't there.

On a different note, here is a cuckoo from last week. I believe it to be Oriental but would like some second opinions. I don't think it to be Eurasian based on the barring, yellowish wash on the vent and undertail coverts, and the size. It was small/dainty looking in flight and zipped into a dense area of trees. The more I look at it I can see features of Indian Cuckoo as well. Keep in mind that the photos were taken in bright side lighting and have not been touched in terms of brightness, colour, etc...

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds Sept. 6, 2015

Did some birding up until dusk last night with my parents. It was fun to stay until dark and see many herons/egrets moving around or coming in to roost. Black Crowned Night-heron is not as common here as in other areas of China so seeing 40 was noteworthy. We also stopped briefly in a mountain area on the way home and heard 4 separate Oriental Scops Owl calling and at least 2 Grey Nightjar, one of which almost flew into us.
