Although never very active, it seems this forum died when it was moved to General Outdoor Equipment from the old forum structure that binned it with other equipment including optics. I rather suspect that all the topics in the General Outdoor Equipment section get less attention than they might if they were included with other equipment. Also, I would think it would make more sense to include Bird Sounds Recording in the same forum as photography, digiscoping and art. In fact, I would suggest merging all three of these fora into one. It is awkward to have to back up to the forum level to go between related topics in these three fora.

I've been asking for the section 'nature in general', to be moved for some time. I don't know how hard it is to do it but it makes no sense to have a nature section below all the optics and other stuff, it would be better, IMHO, appearing after the bird section. Several people have said that they didn't even know it was there as you have to scroll down so far, past tons of unrelated stuff.

In a mirror of taxonomy some forum folk are lumpers and some are splitters. Whilst splitting works if you have a core of enthusiastic specialists once that falls below a critical mass the sub-forum is doomed. A look at the regional forums illustrates this, some are posted in almost daily and some haven't had a post in years. I'm of the lumping persuasion, I'm fine with a specialist thread. If it dries up it just falls by the wayside.

Still dead! But for any lurkers out there reading this, here's a link to a thread in a binoculars subforum that contains some discussion of watches.

Please be precise in where you would like to see the Watches forum and others, We can move things around but I cant picture what you are saying?

thanks

That thread has nothing to do with watches per se, but rather with people buying and selling used Swarovski binoculars at high prices ... just like old Rolex watches. Good grief!

Several of the posts on page 2 of that thread are no different than what you would find on a typical thread on a watch forum like WatchUSeek. They are as good or better than many posts in this subforum. This forum has been dead a long time so that Swarovski thread as good as it gets for watches on BirdForum!

I can't remember the details precisely, but before BirdForum was restructured with the switch to the current interface, Binoculars was a subforum within a broader category of Birding Equipment or something like that. Spotting Scopes and Tripods was also a subforum within that larger birding equipment forum, as were Photography, Watches in the Field, Digiscoping, Sound Recording, and maybe some other topics. Consequently, when a BirdfForum user interested in some sort of equipment would browse back to the Birding Equipment level in the forum structure (as I did frequently, to switch between the Binoculars subforum and the Scopes and Tripods subforum, they would see the other subforums listed with the latest topic under discussion on that subforum and so might be enticed to give one of those other subforums a look from time to time.

When BirdForum was restructured, Binoculars and Spotting Scopes became its own forum, so a user such as myself doesn't have to back out as far to switch between them and so never sees other equipment forums or subforums that might be of interest from time to time. To see those other equipment related forums, a user has to back up all the way to the forum level. In this new structure, the optics equipment forums of greatest interest (highest traffic), namely Binoculars and Spotting Scopes and Photography and Digiscoping are separated from each at the forum level and from some closely related forums or subforums of less interest that are lost in the dust-bin category General Outdoor Equipment. I think it might be good to move the Bird Sounds Recording subforum to the Photography and Digiscoping forum, since it is a closely related topic. Short of putting all the equipment forums back into a Birding Equipment forum, I'm not sure how to solve the problem for the Watches subforum. Maybe it would be best to move it into the Miscellaneous Nature Study Equipment subforum so visitors there would see it. Or maybe a better solution would be to dissolve the Miscellaneous Nature Study Equipment subforum and bring everything there out to General Outdoor Equipment. Having watches as its own subforum elevates it from other topics, but ironically into a level where it is rarely stumbled across. It is orphaned and not seen unless a person specifically seeks it out.

Hope this helps.

The reason this forum is 'dead' is simple the fact that no one is using it. All it takes is two folk to be interested in something and actively post. Some very active sub-fora are only used by two or three people, but they are having useful, bird related, conversations so all the better.

Who knows when another Bird Forum member with a side interest in posh watches will show up.

I disagree, for the reasons that I detailed above. This forum was never very active but it went dead exactly at the time that BirdForum restructured. I think a change of structure could bring it back by making it more visible. Even if it isn't intensely wanted, this forum could thereby have more use/utility than it does at present.

Steve,
can you reorganise the 'Nature in general' section so that it sits above the rest of the equipment stuff and is actually better located next to the birding stuff?

It's currently located in such a place that anyone unfamiliar with the site will possibly not see it, you get to the end of the bird stuff and some people might think that's it but it's not. Surely if it's connected to nature, even if it's not birds, it should logically sit below 'your local patch', above all the non nature forums?

Scrolling past five or six non nature forums to get to it just seems odd to me and some others.

"Build it and they will come".

If you like watches then post some stuff about watches.

I think the performance of this forum demonstrates that how you build it has a big influence on how many come. Unfortunately, the new build (i.e. the location of Watches in the Field) is inferior to the old.
