What a day today then at Carsington.... Black Redstart all day, Great Northern Diver in virtually full summer plumage very close at dusk off Lane Ends (literally just off shore!) Common Scoter (fem), Scaup (fem) and Ring billed Gull off Lane Ends in the roost, plus the usual supporting cast of YLGull (inc a "new" 2nd winter in the roost), Pintail etc........

Wow!!!

Good day all round although I missed out on the Ring billed today. The highlight for me was without doubt the Black Redstart. Started off at Wyver and had 5 Shoveler, 4 Skylarks over, Green Wood, Water Rail and 3 Snipe.

Got the phone call about the Black Red and was fortunate enough to get a lift there so was there within half hour of the call. Black Red showed well although it wouldn't stay still for long. Managed to get a few shots though. Good views of the Diver, Scaup and Common Scoter so not a bad day.

Nice shot of there.

Kept bumping into a guy from the other side of Manchester, by the end of the day I think he'd had about 5 lifers at Carsington today, decent birds all of them. Memorable day all round really.

Anybody know more about the Bittern reported last night?

I'm wondering if the Bittern report is erroneous....is that spelt right? Everyone I spoke to today didn't know anything about it. Maybe the record refers to the Willington bird?

Maybe Carr Vale, it's probably just one site above Carsi on the drop-down box on the BG submissions page.

Carsington continues to produce the goods...good views of Ring billed Gull at 15:45 when MAP picked it up on the spit. It then landed infront of Sheepwash hide, before flying towards us, giving excellent flight views.
Also present, and not all seen by me,were 8 Pintail,Common Scoter, Garganey,Scaup,2 Shoveler, 3 RC Pochard, Madarin,GN Diver,YL Gull,Dunlin plus all the usual stuff. With the water levels so low, and plenty of shore, what chance some more good birds soon?

Good stuff, Clive. Do you know where the Garganey was seen? I should be up tomorrow and I've still not come across it.

Michael, if you want to PM me your mobile number I'll text you if something half decent turns up at Wyver or Carsington. It's not been reported today so I guess it's no longer present.

As for the Bittern report. I still think It's a mistake and the bird probably refers to one seen at Carr Vale or Willington. Although It would be nice if it were true everyone I know who goes to Carsi knows nothing about one being there.

Getting there...
Off for my first trip to Carsington today - hoping for RB Gull, YL Gull, GN Diver and Scaup, all of which would be lifers. Wish me luck!

Whilst driving up the M1 this morning I had a skein of approx 150 Pink Feet going west over the motorway near Tibshelf services, and then further up near J29 there were two huge skeins that may have been viewable from Carr Vale. I would guess at 400+ birds but counting from a moving vehicle is not to be recommended........!
The weather was very bright and clear - makes me wonder how many more I'd missed.

By the way, any Larophiles out there are recommended to try Didcot, Oxfordshire at the moment for the abundance of gulls there and of course the Azorean Yellow Legged bird (a real monster). There are Mediterranean Yellow Legs, Caspian gulls and lots of Kites - one of which sat in the middle of the roost for an hour with an identity crisis!

And if you can tie in a visit to the Brown Shrike at Staines like we did then it makes a great day out (more Parakeets than Starlings present). The area is great despite its proximity to Terminal 5 and produced Water Pipits, Jack Snipe, Merlin, 4 Greenpeckers, Firecrest, Stonechats, 2 Kingfishers and of course an obliging Brown Shrike.

With the returning Ring Billed Gull at Carsington and a few Yellow Legs of our own, it seems the gulls will be back in favour again, despite the closure of the tips that made for such good viewing around Poolsbrook recently.

Lets hope the white wingers are back soon too.

Good day at Carsington today - Great Northern Diver and Yellow-legged Gull were lifers, and finally ticked Barnacle Goose (I didn't want to do Cat C's, but I could be waiting forever for genuine Cat A birds in my neck of the woods...). Other highlights included Willow Tit, Buzzard, Pintail, Shoveler etc. - missed out on the Scaup and the Ring-billed Gull never materialised, but a cracking day. I'll definitely be going again.

Hi Pete, glad you had a good day at Carsi. I wonder if it was you sitting next to me when I pointed out the Yellow-legged Gull flying in front of Sheepwash hide and then landing on the water?

Thought it might be, nice to meet you. No joy with the Ring-billed. I stayed in sheepwash until almost dark but no luck. A few birders went down to Lane End hide so they might have had it there.
