Sorry if I am being dim, but Velvet Scoter where Dave? Heard nothing of RBG either.

Not sure where it was, that's why I was asking on here if anybody knew anything. If you go onto the DOS site click on Bird News and look at January's highlights on the left of the page. Towards the bottom it mentions Velvet Scoter.

Somebody who goes up the res and down Wyver was up the res looking for the Red-necked Grebes a couple of weeks ago. He got talking to some other birder who reckons he had a Ring-billed Gull at Sheepwash.

hi everyone, popped over to ambaston yesterday to look around the old pits.
Present wer 45 coot, 1 of which was nest building already, 10 cormorants, 20 gadwall,15 tufted ducks, 4 G C Grebes, 2 Little Grebes, 20 Pochard, 5 mute swan, 3 skylark, 5 yellowhammer, 2 reed buntings plus green woodpecker and buzzard. Didnt get very far though, not much time,
I was just wondering if anyone knows where the actual footpath takes you after you get round to the end of the first pool?

Hiya,

I have a suspicion it was a one observer claim at Ogston of Velvet Scoter..... I seem to remember I got asked If I had seen anything that evening via Email 'cause I was there on the day with several others, and no, no-one saw it!!!!

Be interesting if there was still a RBG around.... wonder though about a new bird with the increase in numbers as they begin to move north again this spring?

Yes talking to Mark this morning, it was a one observer job at Oggie on 1st Jan I think.

Tried to get into Willington last week but the access track was flooded, is this still the case or has it subsided & is there another way in to the canal pool.

cheers Mike.

There is a footpath leading to the canal towpath, a short way to the west of the main Meadow Lane entrance. This eventually leads to the Canal pit, there's also a bridge over the railway along here that can get you to the main nature reserve bit.

This map link may help:

Thanks for that Richard, my OS map is about 25 years old, so will try that route in.

Cheers Mike.

Whoopers were still present yesterday at Carsi till at least 4-10pm, they were sitting in the middle of the reservoir occasionally calling etc. They got more active the later it got too, when I first saw them several were snoozing but when I left they were all swimming an stretching etc. Second biggest flock I've seen at Carsington.

Did anyone get more than 3 young birds in the flock?

GND still to, off Fishtail Creek.

Saw my first pochard (just been ID's on forum as thought it may have been a mallard mix) today. Only one amongst many mallards at Buxton park.

Hiya,

Might need to disappoint you as the bird in your post on the ID forum is the resident escaped Canvasback thats been present at Buxton for a while now!:-C

Thanks for the info Steph! First time ever seen one and had never noticed it there before as usually mallards......just thought it was a mallard cross of some sort initially.

Any idea where it escaped from?

No sadly not really sure as to its original home.... there is a strange collection of wildfowl up at Chinley where they keep a weird selection of ducks including Hooded Mergansers etc.
I think it caused a bit of a stir when it first turned up till it was realised it was pinioned.... thinking about it it must have walked/swam away from whatever collection it was in then in the first place:-O

Nice photo by the way!

Didn't even notice if any were young birds Steph, when they first came in they were next to impossible to count as they were all head bobbing and interacting, so just a jumble of birds,(eventually settled at 24 with assistance from another birder).Nice to see though, was that one or two were actually standing on the ice..not too common a sight in Derbyshire I will bet.
