Shipley / American Adventure Nature Reserve

For those who haven't seen it this represents a huge step forward for this important local site. Brilliant news.

The below is taken from DWT website:

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and Derbyshire County Council are to create a huge new nature reserve in Shipley, after Derbyshire Wildlife Trust was awarded a government grant of £606,000.

The money, the largest grant ever received by the Trust, is to come from the 6Cs Strategic Green Infrastructure Growth Fund. It will be used to buy 148.2 acres of land, the southern part of the former American Adventure theme park site, from the county council. The council are donating a further 35.36 acres to the Trust, subject to final approval by county councillors.

The new land will join the Trust’s existing Mapperley Wood Nature Reserve to Shipley Wood, creating the largest nature reserve in Derbyshire outside the Peak District National Park.

Trust Chief Executive Ed Green commented: “We are delighted to have received the grant which will enable us to safeguard a large area for wildlife. In many places, green belt land is under threat from development and it’s exciting to know that we can protect this area. It’s early days yet but we look forward to creating an outstanding nature reserve to benefit wildlife and people in this part of the county.”

The Trust will hold public consultation meetings to involve the local community in decisions about the site and there will be opportunities for people to join in with practical habitat creation work. Ed Green explained: “We want people to enjoy this land and its wildlife – as well as opportunities to help shape its future, this nature reserve will also provide a wonderful place for local children to explore the outdoors and learn about nature.”

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Councillor Simon Spencer said: “We’re delighted that Derbyshire Wildlife Trust have secured the funding for this vital nature reserve. This is an important milestone in our plans for the whole of the former American Adventure site and will provide a fantastic facility for the local community.”

Had a walk around Alderwasley Park earlier. No sign of the Lesser Pecker but I imagine it wont be calling or drumming now anyway so it would be pretty hard to locate. Plenty of Willow Warblers singing with a few Chiff Chaffs and Blackcaps. At least 2 Tree Pipits, Meadow Pipits and quite a few Linnets.
2 Buzzards soaring over the woods and a Redstart singing although I couldn't see it.

The Great Reed Warbler is still showing well this afternoon at Straw's Bridge, also a Black Tern there this morning.

Took the dog up on Rose End Meadows, at half time in the footy, and had a Red Kite drifting high to the north. Legged it back home, to add it to the garden list, but could not locate it again.

Went back to Straws Bridge today at 6am, I could afford to be patient this time and really wanted a photo or two.

It showed well at times on the edge of the reed bed, singing away, at one stage giving a Blue Tit what for when it strayed into the reeds.

I got my photos and a video which I'll upload later to YouTube (edit: now at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWBLCQ3D4Z0) and make available on my blog.

Anyone who hasn't been to see this bird I'd recommend they go.

Hi Chris

Great shots put my digy scope shots to shame.

As you say its a great bird and what a pair of lungs it has heard it from soon as I came under the bridge, and quite a nice spot in general.

got to see it for the 2nd time yesterday afternoon, and with much better views than my 1st, i failed on getting any pics as my canon 350d has totally died on me, and the best is i could have got a reasonable shot too :C.

But hey it was a great day finishing off with temmincks stint and oriental pratincole, my best birding day for a long time. effictively" 3 tick day.

Hows the great reed been going today? I was talking to 2 chaps at frampton last night who were going for the warbler today,.

Great Reed Warbler

Hi All

Totally agree with Chris, Tim and Michael.

Great bird, not just because it was a life-tick - but it just seems to keep singing it's heart out, knowing full well that, like yesterday (Sunday) when I was there for a good hour or two, a decent number of birders (30+ at one point) are close by.

I'm not a photographer, but have attached a couple of record (hand-held digiscoped) shots to add another couple of views of this 'star' to those of Chris.

Cheers

Not sure if they are there today but I had storming views of the 2 Dotterel at Abney Moor yesterday....they were snoozing in the sun most of the time though whilst I was there, a bit like me! If they are still there its best to park just beyond the Gliding Club at Great Hucklow, SK187769 just by the turn off for Abney Grange (loose term drive is perhaps better), then walk on the footpath north over the first obvious ridge and the birds were on a piece of bare earth and dead bracken on the left..... be carefull not to flush them as they are typically hard to see!

The heat haze was a real pain for photography but I managed a few sharpish shots.... its nice this year though to be able to complain about heat haze isn't it:-O

Also here were loads of Wheatear and Meadow Pipits, plus a fly through Hobby that I missed!

Incoherently Rambling .....
Got to see the GRW this morning :t: I was early 07.30am and enjoyed fairly good views along with another couple of friendly birders. Was nice to almost have the place to ourselves for a couple of hours.....

I was suprised by its size, even with the reports on this thread...Its huge :eek!: what a stunning bird.

It got a bit busy 9.30am with a dozen more watchers in attendance so I left them to it

Really pleased I made the effort

Dave

now for the dottrels... can anyone be kind enough to supply me with a postcade to tap into my sat nav
Cheers

Derwent Valley Birder
http://ofpiesandbirds.blogspot.com/

and I think this is why!!! no prizes for guessing who he is referring too........i have witnessed that very special "field craft" on many an occasion......

Might be dense here but I don't know who he's referring to. I met the Biking Birder at Carsington on monday and like the blog said, he's a decent chap. I think he was pleased as I put him in the right direction for Willow Tit.
