The ref is:
Зубарева В.I. [Zubareva V.I.] 1948. Плiоценовi марабу i грицайя. [Pliocene marabou and 'gritsayya'.] Труди Інституту зоології АН УРСР [Proceedings of the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Science of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic], 1: 114-137.

But I can't find it online either. I don't know her given name and patronymic (what "В.I." stand for). The work is apparently written in Ukrainian (cited with an Ukrainian title in Russian works.). The word грицайя doesn't seem to be in dictionaries but, I presume, refers to Gryzaja odessana, which she described in 1939 (and which seems to be a bustard).

Ardea bennuides Hoch, 1979
I discussed this species with Dr. Ella Hoch:
Dear Dr. Hoch,

Since the 1990's I am interested in fossil birds and every now and then I came across a species described by you called Ardea bennuides Hoch, 1977.
Unfortunately, I cannot find any reference for the description of the
species, and believe me, I have tried. Can you in any way clear up the
status of the species and give the reference to the paper, or even better,
the paper itself ?

Sincerely,

Fred Ruhe.

She replied:

Dear Fred Ruhe,

Thank you for the letter and your interest in Ardea bennuides. You are touching a point of bad conscience in me. After careful studies I wrote about the partial bones of the very large heron I had discovered while studying bones from archaeological excavations in the Persian Gulf region, and I shal be adding the reference below. The site of Umm an-Nar is no longer accessible for excavations since it (or much of it) forms part of the airport facilities of Abu Dhabi, and Danish archaelogical excavations no longer take place in the Emirates as far as I know. The then driving forces (at Moesgaard archaeological centre, near Aarhus in Denmark) are either dead or retired, personally I went back to my studies of palaeontology after I had worked on the Arabian material, and I did not keep my promise (given in the first publication) of writing a formal description of the extinct heron species. I have left Copenhagen University, am now associated with a small palaeontological museum in another part of Denmark and, without leaving palaeontology, have recently focused on science history (I shall attach a recent paper that may be of interest to Dutch readers due to the importance of Leiden and Amsterdam Universities mentioned there). But the Bennu heron is still part of my world of wishes of return - I may continue work on it, especially create a place for it in Abu Dhabi. As you may know, there is strong interest in the Emirates of gaining insight in times before now in their region.

The original paper is:

With the year of publication being 1979, it would be correct to write Ardea bennuides Hoch, 1979 (not 1977). Where did you obtain your information?

A university library in the Netherlands will be able to find the article for you. I may be able to get an electronic copy here, but I have no more reprints.

With my kind regards,

Ella Hoch

For this one I can only offer Google Books snippets:

https://books.google.com/books?id=8QBuAAAAMAAJ&q="heron"
This was indeed not intended to be a formal description, but she used the name and diagnosed the bird as an Ardea heron "much larger than any extant heron".

The Bennu heron Ardea bennuides is weird from the zoogeography / ecology point of view. It is unusual to have a large mainland waterbird with so restricted distribution - only South Arabia, and to have a mainland bird go extinct in the recent millenia.

If it was not described, what are the chances of some mistake? I may be asking a naive question - but what are the chances of confusion with bones of flamingos, marabous or other extant species?

Well, this question is not easy to answer. We know very little of this species, the only material is a fragment of a tibiotarsus. What I know about it is what Ella Hoch wrote to me and that I remember to have red somewhere that it is bigger than Ardea herodias. On Wikipedia it is said: It was very large and based on remains discovered, it is possible that it was approximately 2 m (6.6 ft) tall and had a wingspan up to 2.7 m (8.9 ft). Thus, it surpasses the size of the largest living species in the heron family, the goliath heron.

When Ella Hoch makes it a heron, it is a heron. She is a very capable paleornithologist and confusion with flamingos, marabous or other extant species is not very likely. I have not seen the specimen, nor have I seen the very short description (just enough to make it a valid species, and a photograph), otherwise I would have published it, And the name and for the rest I point to my remarks with the species.
Keep in mind, I try to give all the Original descriptions of all fossil birds, nothing more, nothing less. It is not to me to question the names, the assingment to genus, famely, order and so on.
Also see:
Zygmunt Bocheñski, 1995
History of Herons of the Western Palaearctic
Acta Zoologica Cracoviense 38: 343-362, pg. 346

The reason I asked Ella Hoch for information was, of course, to learn more about the species. If I could give you more information, I would.

Another reason not to doubt the assignment of the fossil to Ardea is of course that up to now nobody challenched it, but that might be becouse of the lack of more specimen.

Large size would be a good distinguishing character from other herons, however, I wondered that it could be not a heron at all.

I am interested in rewilding, and Ardea bennuides might be, potentially, a species wiped out prehistorically by humans like e.g. wild dromedary camels. But, given the little material, which is unavailable, I think saying or assuming it is another 'extinct megafauna' would be taking too many premature conclusions.

By the way, my understanding is that linking it with a deity Bennu from Egyptian mythology is a metaphor. Egyptian drawings of an oversized heron were not meant to be realistic, Bennu was symbolized by a bird drawing, not believed to be literally a bird-shaped entity, and it was symbolized by several dissimilar bird species, also e.g. yellow wagtail.
