The Euornithes are the sister group of the Enantiornithes. it is the clade that also incldes the modern birds. They are defined as a natural group which includes the most recent common ancestor of all avialans closer to modern birds than to Sinornis. The taxonomy follows for a lirge part Zelenkov, 2015.

Fred, is the following piece possibly of some help?

O. C. Marsh. 1873. Notice of a new Species of Ichthyornis, published in American Journal of Science and Arts (Series 3), vol. 5 (No. 1).

Is so, as "Ichthyornis celer", on p.74 (here).

However; enjoy!

Google Books alternative: here.
(archive.org, which hosts the images shown on BHL, seems to have problems right now, indeed. Hence the blank pages there.)

This was in the Jan 1873 issue of the journal.

The genus name Apatornis was introduced in a paper that appeared in the next issue (Feb 1873) of the same journal :
Marsh OC. 1873. On a new sub-class of fossil birds (Odontornithes). Am. J. Sci. Arts, ser. 3, 5: 161-162.; here, alt. here.
...BUT that was also published in advance by the author on 21 Jan 1873 -- the separate is reproduced here.

(This seems at least potentially problematic nomenclaturally : in the absence of further evidence, the Jan issue of the journal must be dated to 31 Jan 1873, which would make it later than the separate. Thus the species name may actually have to be taken from the separate as well, and the original combination may be with Apatornis rather than Ichthyornis. Unless the species name is deemed nude in the separate -- in which case the genus name would be nude there as well...)

For both publicationas I have the date as Ichthyornis celer Marsh, 1873 Januari 1873 and Apatornis celer (Marsh Januari 21 1873). So I think you might be right, although I doubt it is a Nomen Nudum, everybodt gives it as a valid species.

Fred

And I think it is a valid description.
FWIW, I never intended to suggest that the description in the journal might not be valid.
What I think could be deemed insufficient, is the set of descriptive elements (which was not really intended to be a description) provided in the separate, where the genus is introduced. This reads: "The species lately described by the writer as Ichthyornis celer also had biconcave vertebræ, and probably teeth. It proves to be generically distinct from the type species of this group, and hence may be named Apatornis celer Marsh. It was about the same size as Ichthyornis dispar but of more slender proportions."

Unless there is evidence to the contrary, the Jan issue of the journal (Björn's source) must be deemed to have appeared after the separate: if so, the species had actually not been "lately described by the writer" when the separate appeared. There are then two options :
  1. if the descriptive elements in the separate are deemed sufficient, the genus and species were both made available there on 21 Jan 1873; the species name was originally combined with Apatornis; nothing was made available in the journal;
  2. if the descriptive elements in the separate are not deemed sufficient, both names are nomina nuda there; the species name must then be deemed to have been made available on 31 Jan 1873 in the journal; it was originally combined with Ichthyornis; the genus must be deemed to have been made available in the next subsequent publication where it was used, hence (unless there is something earlier) on 28 Feb 1873 in the journal.

I think you are quite right, allthough it is a bit of hair splitting. But I think it is much easier, the separate was written after the description of the species, but published before the publication of the original description. This caused the problem. There are other examples of this problem: Genus Palaeocursornis biharicus Kessler et Jurcsák, 1986 and Eurolimnornis corneti Kessler et Jurcsák, 1986. Finally solved by
Walter J. Bock & Paul Bühler, 1996,
Nomenclature of Cretaceous Birds from Romania
Cretaceous Research 17: 509-514
