Parttimer, Went to look twice last week, couldnt see a thing :-C
Saves me a trip then - thanks for that 'sandymere'. I am hoping to get out with my Camera tomorrow for the first time in 'yonks'. Might try Isley and Fremington Pill, then again a chance of a snap of a Bittern at Arlington would be nice. Does anyone know if there are still Crossbills at Wistlandpound ?

What you looking at?
Hi folks! Greetings from the east :)

My old man lead one of his boat trips on the Exe today. Highlights were the drake Smew, a drake Goosander up river from Turf, and an impressive FIVE Great Northern Divers (incl. two together - all near the mouth of the estuary).

Have any of you North Devon birders any knowledge of the Crane reported on Birdguides at Penhill at 16:40 on the 15th? I have spoken to Jon T and John W and neither have any knowledge. I searched from Bple to Isley yesterday and no sign. There were c140 Dark-bellied Brents grazing on Penhill Marshes and at least 1 Pale-bellied. The 6 Spoonbills had reassembled on Isley at 09:40.

First I have heard about the Crane Maurice, I am hoping to have a walk from Fremington Pill to Barum via the Tarka trail this afternoon - will have to keep my eyes peeled.

Maurice, I had a call this evening from a Torrington guy who said he saw the silhouette of a Crane or Flamingo like bird flying over Widdon Valley towards the South Molton direction at 8.15 this morning - apparently it was being mobbed by Gulls. It looks like the Penhill Crane has been around for several days.

Re: North Devon Crane.
The Crane reported on Birdguides on 15/01/2010 was seen and photographed by Robert Jutson. He saw the bird on a sandbank just off Penhill Marsh at about 16:40 and photographed it in poor light and windy conditions. Although the image was poor it was identified as a 1st winter juvenile by Mike Langman. It was last seen over Whiddon Valley in Barnstaple at 08:15 0n the 18th, flying east towards South Molton. The person who saw it then, said that it was being mobbed by Gulls. The observer thought it may have been a Crane or Flamingo flying overhead.

I note from Birdguides that someone saw a ringtail Hen Harrier along the toll road near Braunton Burrows this afternoon. I saw one in Croyde too - perhaps the same bird. Mine was at about 2 p.m.

Anyone know where the spotted sand has most recently been seen in Topsham? Last thing I heard it was mooching about near the riverside park, is this still the case?

Cheers

No luck with the Bittern in the rain at Budleigh Salterton today but a good place to loaf about for most of the day with Kingfishers, two Peregrines and a Cetti's Warbler.

West Charleton Marsh / Bay

Beautiful walk on a still, crisp morning. Ground very bad underfoot, as bad as i've ever seen here but it meant i had the whole place to myself. The non- avian highlight was in the channel at the bottom of the marsh near the hide. Thought a distant movement on the water might be a Little Grebe but when i looked through my bins it was a superb Otter, the first i've ever seen here. Had great views for 5 minutes before it dissapeared.
As for the birds of the 103 Brent Geese the vast majority were in a distant field near Ilton Woods but it was easy to make out one pale -bellied. In the bay were 5 Goldeneye, a good count these days. 200 Dunlin and 16 Grey Plover flying east across the bay, presumably a high tide movement exiting for Slapton Sands. Also in the bay 2 Bar-tailed Godwits, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, Kingfisher, Water Rail and 50 Redwings on the marsh.

Stafford Moor Fishery

I went looking for Tufted Ducks, but there were 2 1/2 pairs of Mallards, as I turned to walk back to there was a Kingfisher flying across one of the pools, first one I have seen for a while.

I remember Stafford Moor well, huge keepnets full of chunky pasties (carp) during club matches using the banal method feeder. We used to have a good big fry up at Winkleigh Airfield on the way there.

I digress.

Water Pipit showing well by the boardwalk at Exton Railway Station this morning. Take your camera, I rued my decision not to.
