A quick look at Preston and Goodrington this morning produced the regular FW Med Gull around Preston. Also 2 Black Necked Grebes, 2 Great Northern Divers (1 of which very close inshore off end of Marine Parade), Eider and 12 Common Scoter off there and a single Red Throated Diver close inshore off Goodrington. Other than that, just a large flock of Black Headed Gulls by the road at Clennon Valley with nothing better than a few Common Gulls amongst them.

PS please guys, post on this thread a bit more!

As most of my Devon birding takes place on Dawlish Warren, anything I come across will be on the website. But in the interest of kick starting this thread for 2007...

The Velvet Scoter was still off Langstone Rock today, but the DW highlight was a Nuthatch - only my second there in 15 years.

Yesterday an Avocet was at Passage House on the Teign Estuary.

Happy New Year all.

Where will you be tommorow?
The 1st of January - what will you be doing, where will you be? What is your target for the year?

All being well, I'll be out and about in the Seaton area tomorrow. Relaxed approach, as opposed to the frantic bird-racing of the last two Januarys.

Targets for the year? Not numerical, that's for sure! I'll be chuffed if I can find one or two goodies (always a buzz), and add a few to my patch list. Must be a bit better at recording the commoner birds. And I know it's a bit hackneyed, but I plan to enjoy it all again.

Nice Grey Phalarope on Bowling Green Marsh today, its on the other side of the pool directly out from the hide, so quite distant but good scope views. Nice way to end the year. Also the Ruddy Duck still there.

So - a stroll round my patch this morning produced 30 species, nothing special, but lovely weather to see in the New Year.

West Charleton Marsh

Walked down to the bird hide early afternoon to blow away the new year cobwebs. Was soon cursing my decision when the thunder started rattling the hide with the rain coming down like stair rods. Every cloud has a silver lining though and whilist waiting for a break in the rain to get back home a superb Bittern flew out of the reeds and went back in just as quickly. Much to my joy it then reappeared 10 minutes later on the edge of the reeds near the hide. Tried to photograph it - Kit Day does not have to worry about me for sure. Watched it for about an hour before it skulked back into the reeds. I will never tire of watching Bitterns. Also on the marsh were 170 Curlew, 2 Bar-wits, 2 Pintail, 70+ Wigeon, 50 + Teals and a Kingfisher.
Also bumped into some non-birders who said they saw a large Grey Heron sized Egret on the marsh, probably nothing but you never know.
Happy new year
Perry

Perry, well done with the Bittern, just a couple of days too late though!

Spent all day at the Warren - 77 species.

Good luck to everyone this year. Plenty of chances to get off to a flyer this year with Grey Phal, Surf Scoter, Cattle Egret, Whooper Swan, WF Goose all in the county today.

Attached is my 2006 county year list if anyone is interested. Let's hope 2007 is as eventful!

Cheers
Kev

(funny game year listing, that makes one drive all that way to see a bird one saw 24 hours previously, but on the other hand if it goes tonight there won't be another chance in Devon to see one for 9-10 months or so)!

In view of weather forecast I decided to have a half day birding in North Devon. No sign of the Scaup though on Yelland Power Station pool though but two Spoonbills flew in to Islay Marsh while I was there. After lunch I dropped my wife off in Barnstaple and I had a look for the Glaucous Gull near the new bridge, no sign though but the finder, Malcolm Shakespeare, was there and he told me that he had watched it for about thirty minutes from 9am.
The Slavonian Grebe was showing very well on the estuary in the channel just past the end of the Pottington Industrial Estate. A good bird for North Devon.
The expected rain didn't arrive until late afternoon. Roger

Morning walk by the Dart produced usual birds including
Pair of Goosanders
Dippers 3
Fieldfare 9
Redwing 50+

There was a small flock of Siskin after last weeks storms but have not yet seen any Brambling this winter. Anyone seen any yet?

Will be on your patch a bit later, hope to get the Goosanders and Siskins. Have seen them at Staverton several times before, where were they when you last saw them?
Cheers,
Jyothi

Hi All,

Just a quick note to let you know that January's Meet the Birds morning at Seaton Marshes bird hide will be running throughout tomorrow morning. Come along for coffee and a chat, last month we were treated to a Leach's Storm Petrel in a box, and a couple of Januarys ago there was a great northern diver in the creek directly in front of the hide. What a treat.

Hope to see you there fi you can make it. If you've not been before, introduce yourself to me when you get there.

James

Can't make it unfortunately, but would love to come if it's on again some time.
Staverton was a little disapointing, with not a single Dipper, Goosander, Kingfisher or Siskin in sight. Got 5 year ticks though.
56 Fieldfare
57 Collared Dove
58 Long-tailed Tit
59 Mistle Thrush
60 Bullfinch
Off to Slapton tommorow, should get about 10 more there.
