Devon Birding (2 Viewers)

A big tick for me!

Saw my first ever Dartford last Sunday :eek!: - a delight to see after the past 3 years looking in the right place but being unlucky.
Also albino Manderin with mate back in North Devon:t:

Owl (possibly Tawny?) 1 Raven, 2 Nuthatch, several Chiffchaff & Whitethroat, Pied Wagtail, Starling, Rook, Crow, House Sparrow, Jackdaw, Dunnock, Robin, Song Thrush, Blackbird

Is this a Tawny Owl, we did not see it for long but would say that it is one of the larger owls? .
..........................................................................................................Looks more like a Jackdaw mobbing this Kestrel yesterday
Not sure on the Owl Robbie but that Kestrel and Jackdaw shot is a great capture.

The Trumpeter Finch gave us the run around on Lundy today, but was finally nailed at about 3 p.m. giving us time to get back to the boat via the pub. Couple of Spotted Flycatchers in Millcombe and a Turtle Dove seen from the Oldenburg about half way back heading at high speed towards Wales. Ghastly weather!

1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Raven, 1 Kestrel, 2 Whitethroat, several Chiffchaff, 20+ Swallow, heard 1 Yellowhammer, 4 Stonechat, Magpie including young bird with no tail hopping about, c2 Linnet, 1 Song Thrush, several Blackbird, Jackdaw, Rook, Crow, Dunnock, Pigeon, Herring Gull, Oystercatcher, Starling, Blue and Great Tit,

As part of its 80th birthday celebrations in 2011, Cornwall Bird Watching and Preservation Society is holding an art exhibition, and is now calling for artists to submit their work.

The exhibition entitled ‘Visions of Nature: an exhibition of Wildlife Art’ is an exciting opportunity to promote the work of the CBWPS.

The exhibition will be held in the Barrow Gallery at Mount Edgcumbe Country Park from
24th July until 6th August 2011.

Please see http://www.cbwps.org.uk/Exhibition.htm for more details.

A Red Kite over Clovelly Cross around Mid day today, tracked it as it few parallel with the A39 in the bude direction for about 1/2 mile before it dropped out of site into a valley.

Without access to the bird news services I would like to ask what the reports said about the Trumpeter Finch today as I am going tomorrow.

Cheers,
Andrew.

Hi Wibble,

I had a text from Shaun Barnes on the island today to say he had seen it at halfway wall at 13.20. I put it on another thread and on Birdguides. I also asked Shaun to try to let the Shore Office know if it is still there in the morning before the boat goes (he did the same for me last Tuesday). At least then you'll have a relaxed journey over! Good luck, it's worth seeing.

Thanks Jon, hope it obliges quickly so I can go and tick as much wildlife as possible to make it a productive trip to Lundy which sadly does not happen as often as it should. Weather looks set to be cloudy and windy but no rain. Touch wood.

Cheers,
Andrew.

Good to see this Magpie a couple of days ago. What long legs it had. Today it was back up in the trees.

Just had a text from Shaun Barnes, the Trumpeter Finch is still present by halfway wall this afternoon. It is incredibly windy though apparently!

I'm going to be down in Devon for a week from the 5th onwards staying at Milton Damerel. Is there any good birding to be had in that immediate are and any suggestions you good gents may have for places to visit will be most welcome.

I hope that finch hangs around cos a trip to Lundy will almost certainly be on the cards.

Oh and definitely a Tawny that Owl.

Nearest spot to you will be Tamar Lake Adam - well worth a visit.

I take it you meant Tamar Lake, googling Tamer Lake sent me off to the States! :-O

Is it better at Upper or Lower? Lower sounds like it's a quieter less outdoor activity orientated spot although I gather the hide is at the Upper part.

Yep Tamar. I think the Lower lake will be best this time of the year (there is also a hide there). The Upper is good in the winter but quite this time of the year I suspect.
