The two at Exminster are no doubt the same individuals as mid winter as well just unreported/unseen for a couple of weeks.

Well having seen 1 of the Exminster Cattle Egrets this afternoon, there is no way of knowing whether or not the birds today are the same as the 2 there previously, as the gap between sightings at Exminster is nearly 7 weeks.

A very nice summer plumaged Water Pipit was just along the road and for the record a Bar-Headed Goose was in the middle of the marsh with the Canada Goose flock.

The Kerreran

Has hat, will stand in the rain
An afternoon stroll around Coleton Fishacre with the folks produced a very nice Chiffchaff, 2 Green Woodpeckers having a yaffling contest, 3 soaring Buzzards, one soaring Raven, and a very vocal Chaffinch ;)

Had a look at Matford Pools this afternoon. Two Green Sandpipers and a Water Rail made it worthwhile playing 'Frogger' with the traffic!

Bowling Green Marsh afterwards was not so great though. I suppose two remaining Pintails were the best I could say about it. No LRP but someone had mentioned a Water Pipit. What's with all them double yellow lines now!!!!

As I understand it some idiot parked in the narrow part of the lane quite a way out from the bank and a lorry with a load of ready mixed cement could not get by.
The summer plumage Water Pipit was on the far bank opposite the hide early afternoon but it was elusive in the vegetation only giving good views every so often.
During the two hours that I was there I did not see any hirrundines but Gary T from Bristol told me later that two Sand Martins passed quickly through mid afternoon.

the thing is this will encourage people to park on the verges and by the bridge!
some thing put the gulls up at the passage house this morning but i couldn't see what. this happened last week and i got a glimpse of a large raptor but was unable to id it.

had a tawney fly past me this evening while i was batting.

da2m,

Don't even think about parking on the verges, it is against the law, and there are signs all along the lane warning people of this!! The local fuzz are just as hot about this as they are with their new-fangled double yellows. Just park at the top of the hill like everyone else and walk those few extra paces to the hide! Alternately, park up the Mount Howe road, and give the locals something else to complain about!! :-O

I wish I'd had an owl flying past me when I used to play cricket. Were you out for a duck? ;)

All I managed today in the screaming north-westerly near-gale, were my first Swallow, and 26 Knot at Mudbank Lane, Exmouth.

I had 2 Curlews on the cricket field up at Harberton (long way inland) while I was playing a few years ago. Rather a distraction when you're trying to keep wicket...

Made a brief visit to Bowling Green a few days ago. No one else in the hide over the course of 2 hours, but nothing really noteworthy save a handful of Sand Martins going through and a couple of Pintail. Some of those godwits are looking pretty smart though.

Firstly, a butterfly worth mentioning:

A Clouded Yellow flew over Hulham Road, Exmouth, near the junction with Exe View Road at 1345hrs.

Tree Pipit, 7 Chiffs & 2 Blackcaps at Maer Vale, Exmouth and Willow Warbler, 7 Chiffs and 6 Sandwich Terns at Orcombe Point.

Oh, and the warmest day this year so far!

Off to Bristol airport today. 2 weeks in Greece can't do any harm to your birding can it ;)
Cheers
Joe

PS. Any advice on getting through customs with a telescope in my hand luggage?

As I was approaching the end of a splendid WeBS count on the Grand Western Canal having seen super stuff like a Long-tailed Tits nest, Willow Warblers, Reed Buntings, Swallows, House Martins, a Nuthatch pair's nest, Kingfishers, Chiffers and a Green Woodpecker I was floored by a stunning Red Kite very close overhead at Tidcombe which drifted northwards towards Aller Hill just east of Knightshayes.

Now before anyone accuses me of coming from the wrong side of the River Tamar ( ;) ), I informed four locals of which only one bothered to reply as well as RBA. Thankfully, IanB successfully got on to it with his scope from his house. There was some glitch in the system probably based on the mobile phone supplier as both text messages did not get through. As soon as I got home, I emailed them hence the delayed report.

I didn't get a text Andrew but thanks to IanB's phonecall I also got on to it from the bedroom window then from near Chevithorne. A Tawny Owl sitting in the hedge outside my lounge window at 19.50 on Wednesday was also a good Devon year tick.

Thanks Gavin. I am still buzzing about it.

Roger, I'm very glad you got on to it too. I frantically sent texts to the local birders of it's progress north including yourself. It is a relief to know at least two others saw it to ease my submission to the county recorder and for Gavin's pleasure (he will read it if the recorder thinks it needs passing round to be laughed at!). Did you by any chance manage a picture? I got my camera out too late.
