do vultures eat their own kind? (2 Viewers)

London Birder said:
strongly suspect they will ... apparently Griffon Vultures have been known to do so in captivity !

Do you mean they start killing/eating their cellmates or start picking themselves?

no, if I remember rightly one captive bird died overnight and the following morning it's compatriots were seen feeding on it ... a totally 'unnatural' situation but wouldn't be surprised if it's documented in the wild ...

There's a Yahoo Group entitled 'Vulture-Conservation' ... appears to be some canabilism references there ...

Yes a Griffin will eat it .Its just another dead meal thats all.

I once worked on a chicken farm and if one got sick the rest would peck it to the bone. Not a morsel left.
All in minutes, about 1 to be honest.

Hey... carrion is carrion, I guess.

I've certainly seen Magpies picking at magpie roadkill, and let's face it "cannibalism" is a human concept.
