Chestnut-bellied Cotinga Doliornis remseni Robbins, G. H. Rosenberg & Molina, 1994 Dr James Van Remsen Jr is Curator of Birds, McIlhenny Distinguished Professor of Natural Science, and Adjunct Professor of Biological Sciences at the Louisiana State University, USA. He became interested in wildlife when just five years old, and by the time he was 11 he was an avid birdwatcher. Berkeley awarded his PhD (1978), his dissertation being 'Geographical ecology of Neotropical kingfishers'. Currently his area of interest is the ecology, evolution and biogeography of Neotropical birds, particularly those of the Andes and the mazon basin. He has numerous published papers such as (1984) 'High incidence of “leap-frog” pattern of geographic variation in Andean birds: implications for the speciation process'. Robbins et al. wrote in their etymology: 'We take great pleasure in naming this new cotinga after our friend and colleague J. Van Remsen Jr, in recognition of his many contributions to Neotropical ornithology, and his special interest in Andean birds'.
