Let us muse on what would be the 'realistic', dream moth for your garden next year. This is going to depend on location, those lucky enough to be coastal, have a lot more scope to dream but my personal Lepidopteran porn star would be Merveille du Jour.

Over to you mothers and happy (bah humbug) Christmas all.

Ooh, so many to choose from! I could probably come up with a dozen or so muchly wanted garden moths, but no I'll not be greedy, and I'll stick to the parameters laid out by the Andy. Eyed Hawk-moth please!

(Merveille du Jour an excellent choice by the way, phwoooaaaarrr!!!!!)

Eyed Hawk Moth for me too.

72.074 Beautiful Marbled, Eublemma purpurina. Rare but happen in Herts.
But I could, like JWN, write a fair list. Next year will only be my second year (come April) with a trap so I've got a lot of holes to fill yet.

I like it, will it catch on? ;)

Ha! I originally wrote the OP, then thought "that's a bit impersonal", changed it to Andy but obviously overlooked the definite article in the edit. Hope it catches on for you!

Moving on from the dream/nightmare that is 'The Andy' ... :-o

Dream moth for 2021 - hmmm. Being in Cornwall a couple miles from the coast and seeing what others get/all the other good stuff occurs it's just not going to be possible to choose a regular species ... but not really sure what decent immigrant would want to get. Death's Head Hawkmoth would be awesome of course, but fairly unlikely.

The Andy!

This species is suspected / believed to have bred nearby, ( certainly a few adults ) have been to traps less than 10 miles from me this year. But Death's Head would have to be the XXXX star.

I've already had my dream moth in the garden once, Kentish Glory, but I wouldn't say no to a repeat visit! Another Rannoch Sprawler would be nice as well, one visited back in 2013. I'd love to see an Elephant Hawk-moth. Another moth-er less than 500m away from me gets them fairly regularly, so it's a realistic one.

Maybe you should sneak over and turn his light off!

I had this scenario with both Lime and Eyed Hawkmoths, somone close would get both, often but it took me ten years to get Lime and fifteen to get Eyed! I can only guess that it's to do with having the LHP in the immediate vicinity?

Elephant Hawk is the commonest of the group at my light, never had Small though.

Kentish Glory is real 'moth porn' though, only ever had one and that was in Russia and not at the light, just stumbled on one during the day, here it is, on my wifes arm.

Two for me: Leopard Moth and Lunar Hornet Moth. 2020 was a good year for both these species in my home county (Cheshire), but they didn't make an appearance for me.

Cheers
Paul

To help to encourage a better moth or two (mostly Clearwings) on to the garden list I have purchased around 16 pheromone lures from Anglian Lepidoptera Supplies. For anyone dreaming of Clearwings it must be the best way of making it happen.

Pretty much the only way afaik.
The only one I've ever seen is Dusky which was laying on the road, stunned, after presumably being clipped by a car near our home in Russia.

I'm fortunate that Merveille du Jour and Scarce Merveille du Jour are both quite regular in my garden. Both stunners.
It's a bit obvious, but my dream moth is Oleander Hawk-moth. Would settle for a Lime Hawk, though.

Never used pheromone lures myself, but a friend has had great success with Clearing pheromones. Apparently it's a question of blink and you miss them, though unless you have a way of trapping them.

The same source that supplies the pheromones also sells the plastic 'lobster pot' trap to put the lures in to capture them, enabling a chance at identification before release.

I'm with PYRTLE and Dantheman, Death's Head has always been (teenager in the 90's and read Silence of the Lambs multiple times - I know it is a different species) and will always be, top. And this despite a very thoughtful colleague buying me some eggs a few years ago for my birthday to rear that were amazing. Agree with Oleander Hawk and Merveille but Willowherb Hawk is also a bit of a UK dream. Have seen them abroad and they are very very cute. Hypercallia citrinalis, Oecophora bractella and Palpita vitrealis if we are going as far as Micros
